Rams pound way to county title

ASHEVILLE Roberson jumped on Erwin ace Jeff Moore for five runs in the first inning and never let the Warriors get close, hammering three home runs en route to a 12-5 win for the Buncombe County championship.

The round-robin Buncombe County Baseball Tournament concluded a three-day schedule Thursday, one day later than planned after snow and cold forced postponement Tuesday. The Rams finished 3-0, while Tuscola, winners of a pair Wednesday, were second with a 2-1 record.

Rams first baseman Ryan Radford and pitcher/twin brother Kory Radford gave mother Donna a birthday present with Kory pitching well through six innings and Ryan earning tournament MVP honors.

"Moores a great pitcher," Ryan Radford said. "We got on the pitches he threw that were good. As a team, we just hit the ball the best Ive ever seen."

His three-run homer in the first inning gave Roberson the 5-0 initial lead, a lead that would eventually increase to 10-0 on Ryan Deans two-run shot to deep left-center in the second and another three runs in the third.

Kory Radford, meanwhile, did not face the bottom of the Erwin order until the third inning, retiring the side in order in the first and giving up a single and a walk before tossing two strikeouts to end the second.

Moore, a UNC Wilmington signee, appeared to be overthrowing in an attempt to overpower the strong Roberson offense, walking three in the first and another in the second.

"Hes a much better pitcher than he showed today," said Erwin coach Mark Gosnell. "Its a big game for him. Its just that we were outmanned, and theres nothing much we can do about that."

The Warriors (7-11) tried to get back into the contest in the bottom of the third when Radford hit leadoff batter Roger White in the shoulder then walked Zach Stewart. Mead Walkers double to the leftfield wall scored pinch-runner Dylan Dicus, and Ronnie Bellomo followed two batters later with a three-run homer to left that cut the lead to 10-4.

It would be the only inning Kory Radford would struggle, as he fired seven strikeouts against three walks.

Roberson (16-1) answered with Chris Prices solo shot to lead off the fourth, then scored again in the sixth off Bellomos fielding error at third that allowed Deans to reach. He advanced on Prices walk and Jason Fletchers fly to center, then scored on a wild pitch.

"Kory did a great job," said Roberson coach Tom Smith. "He had little bad inning, but he pitched. He doesnt overpower anybody, but he pitches."

Matt Ayers allowed the final Erwin run in the seventh, giving up a one-out walk to Steven Riniggo, who scored on Moores two-out double. Ayers then struck out his third batter of the inning, Brandon Henry, to end the game.
