Dutch Mole 4
Episode 11

These three are the contestants who made it into the finale. We will finally find out who is The Mole and who caught him/her.

Amsterdam - Holland
In a bar, there's a small monitor on the coutner. A gloved hand puts the instruction tape in it and preses play.
The host appears:"Hey Mole! Only a short while and you can make yourself known. You can be sure that most of them still don't know it. It will be very exciting. Now get out of here, because they're slowly arriving! Good luck!"
An unmasked hand presses stop and the camera zooms out, exposing the person!

It's Angela, the host. "This way I gave The Mole instructions during 11 weeks. Tonight all will be revealed. We'll see who will take home the group pot, who lost and who is The Mole. It all started in a very cold Canada where 10 unknown Dutch people went to."

May 2003 - Amsterdam
Rene is driving in a car towards the location in Amsterdam.
"Why I didn't make it to the final round? Yeah, that's a good question. Maybe I answered some questions wrong, or I just had the complete wrong Mole. I also once thought it could be Chandrika, because she was a bit suspicious now and then too. So am very curious to find out about it."

Louis also arrives and meets Rene at the parking lot.
"Ron is The Mole. Because, mostly in the last few episodes, he was very prominent. And I have to say that action at the helicopter was magnificent! That was a real Mole act!"

They go inside where the host awaits them. "It's nice to see you two again. You both experienced the most difficult eliminations. Louis was first. Tell us again how bad it is to go first."
Louis:"It's terrible to be the first one to go. You don't get the chance to open out as a good Mole catcher."

Astrid is on her way by bike.
"I left the game because I lost track. My last questionnaire wasn't very good because of that, I thought. I was suspecting Elise, but I didn't have enough information about her, so I was behind. Looking back, I still think it's Elise."

Host:"And Rene, you had that terrible elimination right before the finale?"
Rene:"Yeah, I could smell the finale, but then had to go. Too bad, that's the game."
Host:"Who was your Mole?"
Rene:"At first I thought it was Astrid and then I switched to Elise."

Astrid walks in and greets the two guys.
Host:"There you are again, it's good to see you. Did you know Rene suspected you so much?"
Astrid:"No, I didn't have a clue!"

Astrid is in a tram.
"I didn't overfocus on my Mole, but at one point, I just couldn't think differently anymore, to see other things. I think Elise is The Mole."

Host:"Which Mole did you suspect?"
Astrid:"I started out with Ferdi."
Host:"But you weren't the only one, because we also have Aafke, who was also suspecting Ferdi."
Aafke walks in and says hi to everyone.
Host:"I think you were the only one who was relieved to be eliminated."
Aafke:"I didn't mind it at all. Afterwards, when I was home, I thought it really sucked, but I didn't mind. It was fantastic to be part of it, but I didn't mind being sent home."

Ferdi arrives on foot.
"Chandrika is The Mole. She showed little initiative. She didn't always tell me the truth and I think that, as a contestant, she didn't do her best too much. It always turned out over and over again that Chandrika is The Mole."

Patricia's also on foot.
"I really thought I had the correct Mole. The first I voted Ron and afterwards always Chandrika. In the beginning I doubted between Ron and Chandrika and then completely focused on Chandrika. Euhmm... I think that Ron is The Mole."

The two meet up and enter the building together.
Host:"Ferdi and Patricia, I never had contestants who were so sure of themselves. You were absolutely certain you had the right Mole!"
Ferdi:"From the first questionnaire on. We had to wait quite a while until we could do our questionaire and then we wrote the person down we suspected and gave it to each other at the same time."
Host:"But that's not so smart, is it?"
Patricia:"Well, there was a risk of course."

Julien is in a cab.
"Chandrika is a good Mole to me. Her character let's you see a façade and you can't see her characteristics. That's not only difficult during challenges, but also outside. She can use that to mislead people and she did that very well."

Host:"You all played a role in this, you decided on his fate. Luckily he also wanted to continue the elimination. Julien, it was very bad that you wanted to continue the elimination too and then you got sent home! You could have had two more days. How does it feel if you're in the plane back home? Because you really wanted to play the game."
Julien:"In the beginning until quite a while after it, I was still happy with it. Because it was one of the more spectacular eliminations ever. If there elimination were you had to be sent home, then I'd choose that one, until I had to wait six hours for my plane in an empty airport, all alone. Then depression hit me and I started thinking about it. That I had better played safely."
They all go sit at a large table and Elise, Chandrika and Ron arrive....

The three sit down at the table too and they all greet each other.
Host:"Elise, are you The Mole?"
Elise thinks... "No."
Host:"Ron... are you The Mole?"
Ron smiles and softly says no.
Host:"Chandrika. Are you The Mole?"
Chandrika glares at her other two final contestants. She then denies being The Mole. So the host suggests to watch the finale...

Day 21 - Montreal, Canada
The three contestants go up with an elevator, all the way to the roof of a high building and meet the host.
Host:"Dear Elise, Chandrika and Ron. The game has been played. I now see a winner... a loser... a Mole. And in a few moments we'll find out who's who. There's € 35.550 in the group pot and in a while, one of you will take it home. The winner is..."

She then says the name of the winner and a while later she says who has won. But clicking pictures is more fun, so click and find out for yourself:

They all congratulate Elise and Ron. Elise is glad it's out in the open now, because it was tough to keep secret. But she also thinks she'll find it a pity it's over, because now she can't lie and fool people anymore.
Host:"Ron, you won. You played the game all by yourself. Do you think that's why you won?"
Ron:"It's a way of playing the game. What other people tell you can't always be the truth, so you have to think for yourself."
Let's see what The Mole did during the challenges...

Day 1 - Canada

Elise:"My first day as a Mole was fun! I didn't do many actions yet, I first worked myself into the group. Try to build some credit by helping and cooperating and being enthusiastic. Acting like I'm dumb and naive. I hope they'll fall for it and that I think I'm naive. Which I'm not of course!"

Unseen footage of confession cams:
Ron:"From my first impressions of today I feel Patricia could be The Mole."
Aafke:"I think Astrid is The Mole. Why? It's an intuition."
Chandrika:"From the beginning... Aafke."
Ferdi:"I think Ron is The Mole."
Louis:"I don't have any suspicions at this moment."
Elise:"No one's suspecting me? Yes! I really hoped so!"

Elise:"I did notice I liked them so much and thought 'Oh no, what am I going to do to them!' "

Day 2 - Laser tunnels
CC
Elise:"I made small mistakes with that mirror in that challenge and blaming someone else for that."
flashback They manage to open the gate and Astrid and Ron run out to get the tripods.
Elise:"I was afraid that they'd start to suspect me, especially when they got that tripods and I broke one of them. I was all 'I don't get it. I can't get the mirror attached to it!' It was a successful day! [laughs] I'm sorry!"
flashback Louis gets eliminated
Elise:"I had a double feeling. It was fun at first, but when Louis got eliminated I felt an outsider in the group and felt I was playing a different role. It was very difficult."

Day 3 - Sailing boat

Elise:"Before we went sailing, Rene said to me 'You have to watch out who gets the phone! Then you might know who The Mole is! Because that's where it will go wrong!"
flashback Host:"You get a phone from me." Both Astrid and Patricia step forward to take the phone. Astrid keeps on walking, so Patricia steps back.
Elise:"Because Rene gave me that tip about the phone, I decided not to be in the neighbourhood of the phone, because everyone would be watching me. So I thought, we only have two hours to do this. I'm going to try to slow it down!"
flashback The ship sets sail. CC from Rene:"Some lines weren't attached well enough and because of a big gust of wind, the sail ripped."
Elise:"And that cost us a lot of time."
flashback of the discussion about Leonardo Dicaprio's age
Elise:"I gave the exact answer to the question! Everyone said 'No, he can't be 28, he's at least 32, he just looks young!' So I said 'Well then it's probably not 28, I don't know.' That's perfect. That I give the correct answer and no one believes me! I'm getting very innocent here!"
flashback Patricia:"Opinions are divided, let's just guess he's 30."

Day 4 - Chained together
flashback of them reading the question 'Who would like to get married. And Ferdi being all weird about it.
Elise:"Today I was with the chained group and Ferdi started being so strange! I thought what is he doing! It looks like a Mole act! Well that's perfect. I didn't have to do much again! To be honest, I'm anxious to do a big sabotage."

flashback of the host during the elimination. She suggest to stop the elimination if they hand in all the money they won. Elise immediately says to go for it. Even though she already got a green screen.
Elise:"I tried to get as much money out of the pot as possible, by trying to let the eliminated person stay in the group. I gave a lot of good arguments, but too many people wanted to continue."

Back to the reunion. The host ask Elise about this elimination and how far one can go with that.
Elise:"I found it very scary. It was my first real scary moment. I tried to play out my social aspect. That I wanted to play the game all together and wasn't in it for the money."
Host:"Julien, looking back, you now see that The Mole tried her best to keep you in the game!"
Julien:"Yeah, thank you very much!"
Elise:"And I don't thank you!" [laughs]
Julien:"At that moment I found it very sentimental, like she just said. It was a weird idea, because we knew it was a game were people would be eliminated. I didn't find it suspicious of Elise, I just thought that's the way she is. But I did find it suspicious of Aafke, because she was my Mole."
Aafka:"It was just vice versa. My emotions and reasons to stop the elimination were real." [laughs]
Host:"It is very scary fo course to be The Mole. But luckily you all helped her so well!"

Day 5 - The Ribbon Challenge

Elise:"I did my first big Mole act today: I got lost so to speak."
Unseen footage of Elise in the woods, talking to the camera, with a flashlight shining in her face:"I'm in the woods and I'm terribly lost. Well, so to speak then, anyway. Because I couldn't find any ribbons of course. I did see something that looked like an arrow or something. It pointed that way, but I went into the woods. And now I'm just waiting here. And time's ticking away. Too bad..."

Elise:"The challenge failed and it even cost us money! € 2,100! So I'm very happy, because Ferdi took 17 ribbons and he's the main suspect now and I'm not."

Day 10 - Canyoning (finding the sugar shack - Astrid taken away from the group)

Elise:"During the car ride I tried to let them lose time, by letting Patricia drive into the wrong direction. That's why I also ran into that church, even though I knew you could find the information quickly at the information desk near the church."
flashback Elise and Chandrika run towards the church, but Patricia yells at them and runs into the information office. Chandrika turns aroudn and wants to go back. Elise:"Maybe we'd better split up and it's best that we run inside the church!" Chandrika:"OK!"
Elise:"And what was a great advantage was that I could take Chandrika along with me and she ran into the bassment. She got very suspicious because of that and I acted dumb."

Day 9 - Blindfolded (find the way back)

Elise:"The blindfold challenge was difficult. At one point I felt the bulge on the tree where we should go right..."
flashback Elise is meanwhile feeling a tree. "It was a bit hollow above and there should be a bulge on the side... it's not this tree."
Elise:"So the rest also thought we had to go straight ahead."

Day 8 - Getting pampered

Elise:"When the host asked for a volunteer, I knew it had to be and so I immediately enthusiastically raised my hand."
flashback Host:"Today I need a volunteer. Someone who..." [Elise already raises her hand] "... hasn't been apart rom the group before." So the host tells Elise to come to her.
Elise:"Because I knew what was going to happen that day. I knew the result from the lumberjack challenge and had to try to convince Ferdi of it."
flashback Ferdi:"Honestly? I want the money. And you?" Elise:".. I'd like the exemption."
Elise:"I wanted to be sure we got that exemption, because it would cost a lot of money. So I acted like I was very nervous and really needed that exemption to stay in the game and didn't care about the money. I guessed Ferdi would give me the exemption. But he said he wasn't going to give that exemption away and wanted to draw lots for it. So we drew lots and he won! He got that exemption. Luckily he didn't give it to me and that way the attention got drawn away from me as Mole."

Back to the reunion... The host asks who deliberately played to be The Mole, to distract the others. Ferdi admits he did it in the ribbon challenge:"I thought it would be very easy to find, but halfway I thought it would fail anyway, so later that night I didn't explain much about what I had done so the others would suspect me."
Host:"The Mole got more inspiration each day and dared to do some more obvious things. Because of that, you slowly started getting suspicious with the others."

Day 11 - I'm going on a trip and I take along with me...

Elise:"I started out with a yoga mat and later Sleeping Beauty. It got so very funny!"
flashback of Elise naming a lepelaar (water bird), a dish for lettuce, a robin,...
Elise:"I was very lucky that Patricia also started naming weird things, because I also did that. And because of that, no one noticed."
flashback of some more weird things Elise named: a pike, oven mints, a wizard.
Elise:"I think they find me innocent and sweet and an open book and that I wouldn't be capable of being The Mole. Some people even told me that litteraly."

Day 12 - Island/Hotel

Elise:"At that challenge I was in the hotel with Rene. I tried to make the walki talki disappear or try to change the volume. But Rene was so on top of it, so I was afraid to do much."

Day 15 - Positive and negative characteristics
Elise:"Right before that challenge I got to hear which characteristics belonged to which person. So when I was standing there I knew what I had to change, which was a bit difficult to find reasons to persuade the others."
flashback Rene doesn't find Chandrika enthusiastic, but Elise says she is. "When she jumped from that bridge and everything!" Ferdi agrees.
Elise:"Ferdi totally followed me, which was great. Rene thought it sucked. He was against changing the characteristics, but didn't push through his opinion enough. Challenge failed!"

Day 16 - Singing songs

Elise:"I knew the three songs that had to be sung, so I didn't sing them! And since I was the one who always started singing a new song each time, it wasn't that difficult to do."

(Back to reunion) Host:"When Rene was suspecting you, I was really on top of you, watching you closely, right?"
Elise:"Yeah it was terrible. He put the pressure on and I started doubting if I would be able to continue with it."
Host:"But you were well prepared. Let's take a look."

Day 15- U-turn
flashback Elise tries to convince Ferdi and Rene to let someone who's well at the challenge go first, so they can teach the second person well. Rene doesn't agree, because the first person can win the least amount of money. Elise pushes through though.

Elise:"I heard that both Ferdi and Rene did a car slip course, so I was bummed and had to come up with something. So I did my first slip perfectly. And my second try I turned ove to much and kept on driving backwards as if I was panicking. It got disapproved, but just barely."

What you didn't know:
We see footage of Elise, who's at a driving school, learning how to do a U-turn on a wet terrain, some months before going to Canada to play the game.
Elise:"I'm in a car at a secret location in Holland. I'm getting taught something which can later give me an advantage for a Mole act."

Day 14 - Find the guest (Bonaventura station)
flashback They meet the host who tells them they each have to do a job. She hands out 5 envelopes of which every contestant has to choose one. Elise is the first one to choose an envelope. She has to ring 10 suitcases to a hotel room.
Elise:"Luckily I knew I had to take the middle envelope, which I got. I had to go to a hotel where I would meet someone."
flashback Elise arrives at the room of the strange guy (which turned out to be George) and he asks her the way to Bonaventura metrostation.

What you didn't know:
Unseen footage: George (the previous Mole) opens the hotel room door and lets Elise in. She knows it's George and they have a talk.

Elise:"I found it great to see George again, my partner in crime. Before I left to Canada I already met him. He gave me some tips and made me feel that I could pull it of. Which was important, to be sure of myself."
September 2002 (before the game was taped): Amsterdam
Elise and George watch the previous series together and George gives her tips. George:"You're a factor in the game and that's what you have to realize as Mole. Then it becomes fun to be The Mole."
CC
Elise:"I had a lot of fun with him and was looking forward to it thanks to him."

flashback of the challenge again. Rene tells Elise he didn't get a clue and Ron tells her to go to Bonaventura station at 5:30.
Elise:"I knew the correct time of course, but I just did what Ron told me."
flashback of Rene calling Elise to tell her it's far away for her and that she'd better take a taxi.
Elise:"Again I had the luck that Rene told me to take a taxi, even though it was only a short walking distance for me. So I took very long to wait for a taxi."
Unseen footage: Elise is standing somewhere in Montreal:"I'm just waiting and will arrive at the station just minutes too late. And then the challenge will have failed. Sorry guys! You should listen to the clues better! You're making it all too easy for me this way!"

Day 18 - Bus Challenge

Elise:"I did well today. I gave a lot of correct answers to the riddles. I also knew the answers. I did that to build some credit so afterwards I could mess things up again. We won €400, which isn't too much. Luckily afterwards it got straightened out again."

Parking Lot Challenge

Elise:"Rene had a plan. I was running around and started frustrating everyone by telling everyone we were doing wrong. Especially Rene was easy to make him frustrated."
flashback They have a discussion after the challenge has failed. Rene:"You were running around all the time, saying [high pitched voice] 'It's not good, it's not good!' but why didn't you do it yourself then?" Elise:"Yeah, but yopu didn't have the answer either. And who had all those keys in his pocket?"
Elise:"It didn't interest me the challenge failed. I was very happy, because I was scared the challenge would succeed. Sometimes I'm scared that Rene is really angry at what I do. But without The Mole there would be no game. It's a game he likes to play, but without me, it would suck. I really hope he won't be mad at me. I'd hate that."

Day 17 - Partner game (in factory)

Elise:"I ran into a room immediately and already found a monitor. [the one with Rene's wife on it] So I ran out immediately and didn't tell the others about it. That cost some time."
flashback Elise has to remember the date it got official between her boyfriend and herself.
Elise:"I knew he would have said the 17th, but the 21st is much more logical. So I had an extra Mole with me to help me. I also notice they're keeping an eye on me. I also don't understand why not everyone knows I'm The Mole yet. If you go over all the facts and things, you should know it's me. I didn't bring one cent into the group pot and only cost money and do weird things."

(Back to reunion) Host:"Chandrika, you were very suspicious. Did you deliberately use that to your advantage?"
Chandrika:"I did use it sometimes. For example in the church, that I ran inside. It's more logical to go to the information desk of course!"
Host:"Patricia, you once said you would be a complete *ss if you were wrong about The Mole. You weren't very impressed about The Mole and were even a bit angry a times. How do you look back at that now, knowing what you know now?"
Patricia:"I can't conclude anything else than that I really was an *ss. I was completely convinced."
Host:"Did you have any idea you were so suspicious?"
Chandrika:"No I didn't think I would be suspected so much. I was very surprised of it!"
Host:"It did bring you far though. Ferdi, when you were in the plane, what did you think? That Chandrika wasn't The Mole or that she still was The Mole, but you didn't have enough question right?"
Ferdi:"Well... when I had made the questionnaire I already knew I would be eliminated."
Host:"How did you know?"
Ferdi:"Because Patricia was eliminated and I knew she voted for Chandrika."
Host:"But you kept on voting for Chandrika."
Ferdi:"Yes, but that's because you have a knowledge problem. You eventually choose someone to be your Mole and you focus completely on that person. I tried to look at the others too, but it was difficult so I thought I'm going to vote Chandrika one more time. And then I was on the plane home and thought 'Oh well then Chandrika isn't The Mole after all.' "
Host:"Do you all know what always works? An exemption! Let's take a look..."

Day 13 - Paintball
flashback Elise arrives at the helicopter with the suitcase, but Ron shoots her.
Elise:"I knew Ron would shoot me. So I made it easy for him, so he could easily shoot me. Which was very good for him of course. The fact that I made him feel very guilty about shooting me, even though I knew it on forehand. I was proud about that."

Day 19 - Who is lying?
flashback They have to select a person that can earn an exemption, but can't get up with anyone, so they have to guess a number the host has written down. Elise guesses the number.
Elise:"I accidentally got the chance to win that exemption. It really wasn't framed, however opposed to the other challenges I didn't get any instructions about the challenge this time. So I know nothing. It's very exciting, because I want to get rid of the money."
Unseen footage: Elise's confession cam:"I think Ron is telling the truth, but tries to do that in a very bad way to misguide me. And the other two are lying. I hope I'm right!" A voice tells her she is right indeed. Elise laughs:"Really?! That's fantastic! It will hurt them though..."

(Reunion) Host:"It's true, she really did win it by herself."
Ron:"We were glad Elise won that exemption and not someone else from us." Chandrika agrees:"That way you have equal chances at the elimination."
Host:"There have been some nerve-wrecking moments for our Mole. Let's watch..."

Day 8 - Interviewing each other
flashback Aafke interviews Elise
Elise:"When Aafke interviewed me... it was very scary. Also because I liked her a lot and she has good knowledge of human character. So I was afraid to be unmasked! It was very uncomfortable, because you're scared you make a slip of the tongue and because it's so intimate all of a sudden. Normally you have the group to cover you.""

Day 3 - The Video Message from The Mole

Elise:"I was very nervous when that message of The Mole came. I didn't even know what I had said anymore. I thought they would all recognize me and my knees were shaking."
The weird looking video message and voice get unscrambled and we see Elise.
Elise:"I thought they would all notice something about me. I even was the one who could act out that voice the best."
flashback Ron missed the video message, so Elise tells him about it in the car, acting out the weird voice.
Elise:"Eventually it turned out it wasn't so straightforward. But I was extremely nervous."

Day 16 - Aliance with Ferdi
CC
Elise:"Ferdi made an alliance with The Mole yesterday. That's very bad for him... I can't say anything else about it. He won't have any help from me."
flashback Ferdi:"You can't make me doubt about it." Elise:"No, if you think it's Chandrika you should go for her."
Elise:"I find it very funny that he's 100 % sure that I'm not The Mole. It's a good action, but it's bad for Ferdi. I feel bad for him."

(Reunion)The host of course asks Ferdi about this.
Ferdi:"The only problem was that she said she suspected Rene. I thought that was unbelievable of her. From then on I thought there was no point in the alliance. I never suspected Elise."
Elise:"In the beginning I felt like a traitor, but then later on I started having fun with it and thought it was very bad of myself that I enjoyed it!"
Host:"Do you still know the moment where you knew it was Elise."
Ron:"I thought The Mole would be Ferdi or Elise during that lumberjack challenge, because that's the place which held the fate of the challenge. So The Mole would be one of those two."
Host:"Just like every year, there were a few hidden clues in the show..."

Hidden clues
flashback of Ferdi's 28th birthday and the cake with number 28 on it.
The number 28 was present in almost every episode.
Jack Dawson's tombstone in episode 2 had number 227 -> 2 x 2 x 7 = 28
Leonardo DiCaprio's age was 28 back then.
The room George (previous Mole) was staying at was 1144 -> 1+1=2 4+4=8 -> 28
The number 28 on the back of a life vest at the challenge where they had to get off the island.
Elise's birthday is on 28th January.

In every instruction tape for The Mole each episode, you can see a black gloved hand. That's the same gloves The Mole has been wearing throughout the series all the time. We get to see several shots of Elise wearing those same gloves.

The Mole's voice in the video message, was adapted using a melody. If you play the melody backwards on a piano, you hear the first notes of 'Für Elise'.

During the blindfold challenge in episode 4, you see a timer 5 times, counting down the time they have left. If you put the last numbers you see before the timer disappears again, all together and replace it by the corresponding letter in the alphabet, you get Elise.
0:29:45 -> 5 = E
0:21:12 -> 12 = L
0:14:09 -> 9 = I
0:04:19 -> 19 = S
0:01:55 -> 5 = E

And then there's the pictures in the tubes:
This was an overexposed picture over Elise's eye and nose.
This is a wedding picture. Her boyfriend and herself are faded out.
However, this was the most obvious one:
Just next to the letters 'avro', you see the necklace Elise has worn every day.

Elise:"During the entire game I have been walking around with this necklace. And I knew there would be a picture of it in one of the tubes. So when they were opened, I found that very scary! I was afraid someone would recognize it."

The contestants and the host toast to Ron, the winner and he receives the money he has won. Next they congratulate The Mole, but they also make a toast to the contestants, because it was very heavy in cold Canada...

Elise has to sing 'under my skin' in each pub for free beer now

Ferdi still "let's the dog out" every day

When Aafke goes shopping, she still calculates how much Canadian dollars a product would cost

After the sailing challenge, Julien (the lawyer) has specialised himself in maritime law

Chandrika has lost her fear of heights and is going to do parachute jumping soon

Louis still hasn't pulled off a 'hole in one', but he did get a second child

Astrid invested her € 7,000 in a coaching course

Patricia will never ever forget Leonardo DiCaprio's age

Rene still is a police officer in the village Zeeland

Ron still has frequent nightmares about his line-dancing adventure
