Caring for Your Trophy

Remember your trophy begins in the field. Always take precautions to keep your animal from bacteria. At 50 degrees or higher bacteria begins to take over as soon as death occurs. Try to get your trophy to the taxidermist as soon as possible. How ever there are steps you can take if that is not possible.

1) Put ice on it as soon as you leave the field (coolers work for small game and birds).

2) The ice should be put in the cavity of big game. (Put inside of a plastic bag to keep the meat from getting wet!)

3)  Take it to the processor or freeze it as soon as possible.

You should cape you big game behind the front legs. Small game and birds can be frozen whole in an air tight plastic bag. If your freezing a wild turkey wrap the head and feet in damp gauze or cloth before placing it in the bag. Fish should be frozen in plastic NOT PAPER because paper will absorb the moisture from the fish and you will lose a lot of color.
