California 1997- I attended a conference in Monterey, and during this trip also managed to run 2 marathons, meet a lovely local lass, dive a huge Californian red abalone, and meet Caroline: with whom I subsequently shared some great adventure holidays, and who has became a good friend....
Flew in to San Francisco, drove to Napa Valley, slept in the car because all accommodation was full, and ran the toughest trail marathon course I have ever done the next morning. Met Caroline during the run, (this pic shows us finishing) exchanged email addresses afterwards, and the rest is a long story...  :)
The conference was in Monterey- a lovely coastal town, and there I met the lovely Kathleen pictured here at her home- a stone's throw from the beach, with her pooch called (wait for it!) Mandela! ...
Taking a break during a hike in the Big Sur - spectacular coastline and redwood forests
Dinner party at Kathleen's: After having driven north to Fort Bragg for a few days research diving, dived the ab, and returned via Yosemite...  we had the red abalone steaks for starters- tender and perfectly done!
The farewell sunset cruise on SF Bay- I never heard from Kathleen again...
Managed to do some of the touristy things: the Surfing Museum in Santa Cruz
Self- portrait : in a contemplative mood in Yosemite ...
Ran the Big Sur trail marathon 2 weeks after the Napa trail marathon- spectacular coastal and forest scenery....
Alcatraz- Impressive- especially the  self- guided tours: courtesy of a Sony Walkman, with commentary from some former inmates adding colour...
