Seychelles: Sept 2001... a few more pix
We splashed out on the 2nd last day and hired a Suzuki jeep to tour Mahe- it was lovely to have the freedom to explore the whole island this way...
When cooking becomes a pain, there are always coconuts- but after all the schlep of picking this one, and hacking off the husk, I prefer the kitchen!!

Click here to go to the Seychelles Underwater page- we did some great snorkelling, and I did 3 scuba dives (around US$45 a time!)
We didn't know that we would arrive the day of a General Election! And that the monday we wanted to get to Praslin, would be a public holiday declared after the election! So nothing was open in Victoria (the capital), and only the expensive cat ferry was going to Praslin ($52 thank you...)  Too bad- here the faithful celebrate Renier's close win...
Our favourite self-catering place: Le Grande Bleu, on Praslin, run by French speaking Justine- dense forest all round (complete with introduced tenrec's (like a dassie with a pointy nose) making noises all night)
Fishing for the locals is complely unregulated: no permits needed for nets or traps, and no taxes to dclare from any income. Above, fishermen on La Digue only needed about 15 minutes to fill the bag with little fish. The diver on left with his haul of live shells for the day- including endangered baby Tridacna clams. One shell I liked, but so did he- wanting about $30 ....
