Scotland in Autumn! My lucky star was shining, and I got invited by my friend, Tess, to accompany her and Jane to Scotland, their homeland, on a driving tour of the midlands and highlands.
Jane makes a willing and photogenic contribution to this moment of serenity and beauty on Loch Lomond
Of course picturesque castles abound- but are expensive to visit for a South African paying rands...
The view from Tess's family flat in Cove, near Glasgow, overlooking Loch Long, where we stayed for a few days
Skye- an island off the west coast is beautiful, and a popular hiking area - this scene reminded me of Tristan da Cunha
An absolute must for me was to visit Loch Ness, and see the audio-visual display of the whole history of sightings... Here Jane was playing so didn't see Nessie peeping- can you??
Yet another castle - this time just the shell. Imagine all the work that went into building these masterpieces!
Skye again- inspiring views, calm sea, and a chilly wind...
Edinburgh Castle- we did a tour of the interior, including the memorial to fallen soldiers, and the Scottish Crown Jewels
One of the lovely scenic coastal fishing villages
On the way back to London- impromptu picnic spot!
"Britain grinds to a halt" read the newspaper headlines... we almost didn't make it back to London because the petrol blockade emptied all the pumps- but we squeaked through in the end, although it added unwanted tension and worry to the end of the holiday
A bonus of the trip was being able to see Bianca and Scott for 2 days in London, where they are working and saving pounds...
