Kruger Park in Spring!  I had the opportunity to join some friends for a week-long camping trip in Kruger Park. Well I hadn't been there for about 20 years (gulp!) so why not!!? It was really great re-connecting with that African feeling again! These pics were taken using small fixed-lens cameras.
OK I know its blurred, but I still like it! Another shitty day in Africa draws to a close...
There were elephant aplenty around Satara, where we camped. Of course I didn't get the picture of the one that charged us- because we had to make a very hasty retreat!! This one was more amiable...
Hyena kept us entertained at night with their weird cries... this one was loping along the road just before gate-closing time...
Ground hornbill- the most ridiculous faces close-up!
Of course lions were high on our wanted list, and we saw plenty! None as close as this fine fellow though- but we laughed when he got up- his tail was missing!!  :-)
Giraffe are always good photographic subjects- this one was particularly good-looking, and seems to know it!!!
We did one night-drive in an open truck which was great- this lioness was soaking up the warmth from the road, and feeling pretty lazy it seems.... note the spotlight from the truck.
Another nocturnal critter sighted on the night drive- a porcupine, which the guide dazzled with the spotlight so that we could photograph it!
All the "other" game were there too- here zebra as usual are accompanied by wildebeest; but we also saw buffalo, hippo, crocs, waterbuck, kudu, impala by the zillion, warthog, as well as a few specials such as bushbuck, a ratel, bataleur eagles, and a pair of giant eagle owls
One of the great aspects of the trip was doing it with experienced Kruger campers, Carole and Kevin & family... right down to cb radios so we could keep in contact while driving! Their equipment, culinary expertise and undiluted enthusiasm made the trip so much more enjoyable.
Words are not needed ... anyone wanting to leave this country needs their head read ...
