From The Beacon Herald Mon. June 9, 2003:

WARTBURG - When he wasn't hitting golf balls or shooting hoops, Joey Achilles was cheering on his favourite driver on the NASCAR circuit.
Joey would have loved to have seen Tony Stewart burn up the field at Pocono Raceway but, sadly, the 13-year-old didn't get a chance to see Sunday's NASCAR race.
A tragic accident in the Meadowview subdivision in Wartburg a day earlier claimed the life of the popular Central Perth Public School student.
Joey was working on his golf game early Saturday morning in his backyard. Later in the morning, he started playing around a concrete culvert on Nuhn Drive, near his home.
The culvert, which was waiting to be installed in the ground, became dislodged. Friends of Joey's sister found him pinned underneath the culvert and went to get some adults who moved the object. CPR was performed until paramedics arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m. He was airlifted to London Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced dead.
Const. Glen Childerley of Perth OPP said the concrete culverts at the construction site were not stacked evenly. "It was tippy," he said. The Ministry of Labour was contacted but did not attend the site because it was not a live construction accident.

Described as a great kid who loved life by a family spokesperson, Joey was looking forward to joining the basketball team at Northwestern Secondary School in the fall. A member at the Stratford municipal golf course, Joey also played Rotary Hockey.
The tragic events response support team was at Central Perth Public School this morning to support teachers and students. Principal Janet Shivas said the "excellent athlete" was well liked by his peers.
The Grade 8 student played volleyball and basketball and competed in track and field for his school. "Any sport that was available he would play, he loved sports," said Ms. Shivas. Joey also gave back by helping run the intramural program. "We have had extended support from throughout the community. It seems like the entire community has pulled together," said Ms. Shivas.
Joey is the son of Dan and Karen and he is survived by brother Donny and sister Karlee.
