Updated the site:
Added my third cousin, Worley E. Wilson, who was killed in Germany in 1945 while leading his men. Have to thank my Uncle Vryl and Aunt Betty for the information and photos. Also adding a new layout for each veteran biography.
WWII in the news:
79 year old Japanese WWII soldier who dissapeared after the war and resurfaced in Russia, returned home to reunite with relatives - 67 years later. Yoshiteru Nakagawa left Japan in 1939 and dissapeared when Soviet forces took Sakhalin Island in 1945. "Little did I dream of being able to come back to Japan," he said.
Vatican will release Pope Pius XI documents from WWII. The pope had some shady connections during the war and many have condemned him for inaction during the Holocaust against Jews and other groups. By the way, my Grandfather Coffman met Pope Pius XI back in 1947 when he headed the wedding of my grandfather's good friend, a major, and an Italian woman.
Dutch hero of WWII and New York native dies at the age of 88. Jaap Penraat, was an architect and industrial designer during WWII who saved 406 Jews escape Nazi-occupied Netherlands and withstood torture to protect fellow Dutch resistance fighters during WWII.
An American WWII vet finally graduates high school with a honorary degree. Mederick "Midge" Zaher would've graduated in 1944 but ended up joining the Marines and serving on the Okinawan islands from 43 to 46.
California has passed legislation calling for Filipinos' WWII contribution to be added to public history text books. The Phillipines, by the way, was a part of the US during WWII and millions fought side by side with Americans to take down Japanese fascism. Only 20,000 Filipino WWII veterans are still alive today.
