Episode 16: Burning at Both Ends
First Aired: 5-22-2004
Guest Starring: Islay Johnston as Hayley
Summary:
The rangers are at the underground lab listening to Tommy explain that when Trent froze him, his dino gem and dino morphers molecular make-ups changed and that is probably why he cant demorph. The labs view screen then shows Trent attacking the city using his Dino Stega Zord. Tommy tells the other three to morph and go stop the threat while he stays behind at the lab to investigate his situation.
The red, blue, and yellow rangers arrive on scene and quickly call for the megazord. The white ranger quickly gains an upper hand, forcing the other rangers to call for the Dimetro and Cephalo Zords. The white ranger then calls forth energy fields and locks the two zords into separate barrels. After a bit of discussion among the rangers, the white ranger blasts the other megazord and disappears with the two zords that he locked up.
The rangers arrive back to the lab and Hayley informs them that Trent has locked the zords underneath a force field. Kira tells the other rangers that its not Trent doing it, its the dino gem making him do it. Conner and Ethan appear unconvinced, but Tommy reminds them that he was in Trents place once and it was the support of his friends that helped him get through it. He then tells Conner, Ethan, and Kira to go to school and keep a low profile.
At his fortress, Mesogog is being briefed about the white rangers recent course of action by Zeltrax. They then begin to formulate a plan that will lure the white ranger into helping them. Conner is currently in the city walking, when Trent appears beside a wall after becoming visible. Trent warns Conner that its not safe to walk alone and informs a shocked Conner that his dino gem power is invisibility.
Conner and Trent then morph (both voluntarily, making it a first for Trent in front of another ranger). They appear equally matched, but their fight is cut short when Zeltrax arrives with the latest creature. Zeltrax then tells the creature to only infect the white one. The monster then blast Trent, forcing him to demorph. Zeltrax and the monster leave and Conner demorphs. He runs over to Trent who informs him that he feels fine and completely normal (i.e. not under the effects of the gem).
Outside of the school, Principal Randall informs Ethan and Kira that she received an e-mail from Tommy stating that he is under the weather and wont be able to work for a while. Kira and Ethan back the story up and Principal Randall takes off. Conner, who is nearby on some bleachers motions at Kira and Ethan to come over to him. He shows them Trent who is nearby, and informs them that the creatures blast may have released the dino gems hold on Trent. Trent then offers to make things right, to which Ethan replies that returning the two zords would be a good start. Trent agrees and tells them to meet him later at a warehouse where hell return the zords and give them a peace offering.
On Mesogogs island, the white ranger informs him that the other rangers took the bait and believed his story. It seems to be an uneasy alliance though, as the white ranger seems to want to have nothing to do with Mesogog, outside of their deal and payment.
Trent is waiting at the warehouse looking rather evil, when the other rangers, including Tommy, arrive. Ethan notices that the zords are not around and Trent informs him that he will give them the peace offering first. Trent then removes a tarp that was covering an object nearby to reveal a black and gold ATV. Feeling that it would be safer if he examined it first, Tommy gets on the ATV. He then mentions that it has a 12-stroke engine to Trent, who agrees. Tommy then states to Trent that they dont make 12-stroke engines. To which Trent states that Mesogog does not make monsters that turn people good. Revealing his true plan, Trent starts the ATV, causing it go off, out of control with Tommy still on board. Trent then calls for his own ATV, morphs, then boards it to go after Tommy. The other three rangers want to go after him, but the creature arrives with some Tyrannodrones to keep them busy.
Tommys unscheduled, out of control joyride has brought him outside of the warehouse, with the white ranger in hot pursuit. Tommy is able to gain some measure of control over the ATV and uses it to fight with the white ranger and his ATV. Meanwhile, the other rangers are using their cycles to fight the creature and Tyrannodrones. However, they do not fair so well and their bikes get blasted, putting them out of commission for a while. Using another trick up their sleeve, the rangers call for their super dino modes and gain a quick upper hand in the fight.
Tommy is still trying to run from the white ranger because he does not want to hurt him. Realizing he has no choice, Tommy decides to engage the white ranger in battle and goes after him. Tommy is able to hold is his own, much like how the other three rangers are doing in their battle with the creature and Tyrannodrones. Tommy soon arrives at the battle and blasts the monster with the ATV, forcing it to retreat. The white ranger arrive on his ATV, gloats about the destruction of the bikes and getting the zords, then leaves, stating that he got what he wants.
At the lab, the rangers debrief about the battle and Ethan informs them that Trent was supposed to defeat them and his failure will not make Mesogog happy. Hayley then informs them that the creatures blasting ray could be used to break the energy shield around the zords. She then comes up with a plan to lure the creature out. The plan will be that the rangers will lure the white ranger out, then Mesogog will send the creature to defeat the white ranger due to his failure, then after the white ranger leaves, they get the creature. The plan works and they capture the creature.
In a forest, the white ranger is sitting in front of the zords, while two starfish-like devices continue to pulsate on their respective barrels. The other rangers arrive at the location and Tommy grabs the creature off of his ATV to make it break the shield. The creature doesnt get the chance as the white rangers blasts it with some laser arrows and then blows the zord barrels up. Amazingly, the zords survived and the white ranger arrives with his Dino Stega Zord. He then makes the Dimetro and Cephalo zord combine with his megazord. The white ranger informs the shocked rangers that the star-fish like devices were to reprogram the zords. The other rangers then call their megazord.
The white ranger quickly outmatches them and prepares to finish them off, but is stopped by a hit from the newly-grown creature. The white ranger quickly defeats it and teleports out. At the lab, Conner, Kira and Ethan are depressed, but get good news when Hayley informs them that she fixed the bikes and reprogrammed the ATV so that they can use it.
Mesogog is sitting in his fortress and reprimanding Zeltrax and Elsa as usual. After he is done, he tells them to leave. Mesogog then gets up to leave, but stops halfway and has a rather painful experience as he turns into Anton Mercer. Anton then leaves and Trent reveals that he was hiding out, invisible, in the room the whole time and saw the transformation.

My Thoughts:
This episode was good, but seem so packed that a lot of things didn't really get the attention that they deserved. Namely, the starfish devices on the zord barrels didn;t get a large mention, but played a large part in the plot. Also, I'm still a little fuzzy about the white ranger, Mesogog treaty. Was it simply so that the white ranger could get an ATV? That's what I think.
We finally learn what I thought all along, that Mesogog and Anton Mercer are one and the same.
The ATV fight was awesome however.
