Research Notes (Husband)
Family tradition reports that two brothers came from Wexford, Ireland. One came first, the other one came a few years later, staid for a while and then left New Brunswick.
Moses Roach appears in land petitions in 1825, 1826 and 1844. In 1825, he is said single, 24 years old, native of Ireland, emigrated 2 years since. In 1826, Michael Sheals petitioned for the same land, as Moses had not worked it, so busy he was lumbering.
Moses was granted 200 acres of land on February 7th, 1827 in Carleton parish, Northumberland County, New Brunswick. No other name was quoted on this land grant.
His land is clearly located on an old map shown on the home page of this site. The oldest Roach relatives told us that the old Roach homestead, where they used to visit their grandparents, was located at that very spot.
This means that the Roach descendants, who we found to be William Roach's offspring settled on the land granted to Moses, not on the land granted to William.
Besides, the Roach seniors also reported about Moses Creek (some call it Moses Spring) located in the area and said their family always told them about Moses in a fatherly way.
Surprizingly, the only descendant that has been found is a young Moses Roach, son of Moses and Mary baptized in St Charles l'Ardoucene in Jul 1838. The Roachnewbrunswick group is puzzled by that baptism, as, around the same time, William Roach and Mary Mooney have a child named Moses too.
Also, a Moses Roach and Hanorah Nevills baptized a daughter called Bridget on March 1st, 1848 in Rexton, Kent county, NB. Interestingly enough, a Patrick Neville lives at the Roach household on the 1861 census. He is 65 years old, and the group wonders whether he might be Hanorah's father.
Cheryl traced Moses Roach and Hanorah Neville. Hanorah emigrated from Ireland in 1836. They moved out to Wellington, Ontario, where they raised their family.
Ontario Moses is mentioned in the Historical Atlas of Wellington County, Ontario published in 1906. He is said originating from Wexford county, first settled in New Brunswick where he was engaged for some years in the ship timber business. In 1850, he came to Maryborough where he purchased 100 acres, lot 10, con. 1. He cleared about 50 acres and lived there until his death. He was catholic.
The Roachnewbrunswick group suspects that Moses Roach who married Hanorah Neville is the one who got the land grant in Kent county, where the old Roach homestead was.
