Anthony Roach and Nita Gammon

Anthony was born 24 Dec 1884 in New Brunswick being the third child and son of William and Margaret (Harnett) Roach. He is in the 1901 Census of Canada in Welford, Kent County, New Brunswick with his parents, siblings and grandparents Anthony Roach Sr. and Mary Roach. Anthony grew up on the family farm in Main River, Kent County, NB. In March 1911, according to Border Crossing records, Anthony came across the Canada-U.S. Border through Eastport, Idaho. He is listed as a “laborer” on the record with a last permanent residence of “Macleod (sp.?), Ontario, Canada” and his final destination was “Sisters, Oregon”.

Anthony met Nita Crystal Gammon Capron while she was working at the Sisters Hotel which was owned by Nita's sister, Myrtle Gammon Dennis and her husband John Dennis. On 26 Jul 1915 in Prineville, Crook County, Oregon, he married Nita (born 5 Dec 1891 in Pomeroy, Washington, USA). Nita had a daughter Lois Capron, age 3 years, by another marriage. Anthony probably later adopted Lois.

In the 1920 US Federal Census, Anthony, Nita, Lois Capron and Victor (Anthony and Nita's son, born in Kennewick, Benton Co., Washington on 24 Aug 1916) resided in Sisters, Deschutes Co., Oregon. Anthony's occupation is “Building Contractor”. In the 1930 US Federal Census, Anthony, Nita, Lois, Victor and Nell (a daughter born in Kennewick, Benton Co., Washington on 26 Dec 1920) resided in LaPine, Deschutes Co., Oregon. The census reports that Anthony was a foreman in a saw mill.
In 1932, shortly before her 21st birthday, Lois Roach became ill and died in Deschutes Co., Oregon, and was buried in Bend, Deschutes Co., Oregon in the Pilot Butte Cemetery.

Anthony owned and operated Roach's Service (Standard Oil Products) in Sisters, Deschutes Co., Oregon for many years. Roach's Service included Anthony's logging truck shop where Anthony had logging trucks, a jammer, and the first Caterpillar in Central Oregon. Anthony made good money in logging in Central Oregon. In the early years, Anthony logged with 8 teams of horses. Anthony's nephew, Ronald Roach (son of Leonard Roach), worked with Anthony after Ronald returned from WWII. Ronald's wife, Norville, joined Ronald in Oregon for a time. The families were very close.
When Anthony became ill from impacted teeth in the 1940s he sold his logging company. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Anthony and Nita lived in Redmond, Deschutes Co., Oregon, and he worked at Spoos Mill near Mitchell, Oregon as the logging boss. His grandchildren remember him running across the logs (with cork boots on) in the log pond at Spoos Mill in order to get to their home at the Mill. He was about 65 years old at the time.

Nita Gammon Roach died of a heart attack in 1955 in Redmond, Oregon. Anthony was very lonely after her death and his grandson, Michael Anthony Roach, born in 1947, son of Victor Anthony Roach, stayed with him a lot. In 1958 Anthony, who had diabetes, had a heart attack and died at the age of 73 years in Redmond. Anthony and Nita are buried together in the Pilot Butte Cemetery in Bend, alongside their daughter Lois.

In 1964, Anthony and Nita's son, Victor Anthony Roach, moved to Ukiah, Mendocino Co., California, along with his wife Annetta and their son, Michael Anthony Roach, age 18 years and daughter Nancy Kay Roach, age 16 years. He leased his new lumber truck to F.M. Crawford Lumber Co. and went to work driving another truck for F.M. Crawford Lumber Co.. F.M.'s (Frank M. Crawford) wife, Vivian Hitchcock Crawford, was a niece of Nita Gammon Roach. Vivian and Victor, who were cousins, were very close.

On 7 September 1966, 2 weeks after Victor's 50th birthday, while returning from a fishing trip in the Northwest Territories, Canada, a plane piloted by Vivian Crawford with her husband Frank, her cousin Victor, and a business associate Earle Mayes onboard disappeared. A massive air search turned up no trace of the plane carrying the 4. Two years to the day, on 7 September 1968, the plane was found by a trapper near Embaras Portage, Alberta, Canada. The remains of the passengers were buried at the site of the crash. Victor was also survived (in 1966) by his 1-year-old granddaughter Angela Sue Roach (daughter of Michael Anthony Roach and his wife Pamela). Victor was a fun-loving person and was loved and missed by all who knew him.

Nellie Jean Roach Nunnellee died of a heart attack in 1995 near Salem, Marion County, Oregon, and is buried in the Redmond Memorial Cemetery, Deschutes Co., Oregon. She is survived by her husband, Jack Nunnellee, son Robert Jack Nunnellee, and daughter Ann Colleen Nunnellee Knorr and many grandchildren. Nellie is missed by her family and many friends.
