Battle Standard
Battle Honours are an official acknowledgement of the part played in a successful campaign or engagement by the ships, units and squadrons which receive them. They serve as a permanent record of achievement of which present and future generations of Service personnel can be proud.
The Royal Air Force has a formal system of awarding Battle Honours. A unit lays claim to honours and after examination of the squadron records, the entitlement requires to be approved by the Ministry of Defence. Up to a maximum of eight battle honours are emblazoned upon Squadron Standards. The practice of awarding Squadron Standards, which are the equivalent of Regimental Colours, began in 1943 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.
