August 12, 2002 CA 1517 Beijing to Shanghai
Shanghai:  After Beijing, we spent a few days in Shanghai--a more cultural area in China as opposed to the historical Beijing.  Could've spent a little less time in here though as we found out that there is not much to do during the day, and the scene was much better at night.  The first night we stayed in a hostel that was basically one large room with 20 cots-- ten on each side of the room.  It seemed like we were staying in an orphanage or in army barracks.  We stayed here for just a night, and then checked-in to the Shanghai Railway Hotel, which was set back in a little village in a hutong ( a small side street ).  We were very close to the enormous Pudong Plaza that has amazing views of the Oriental Pearl Tower. By this time, we were missing Thai food, and set out for dinner at Simpy Thai. Went to the Shanghai Art Musuem and Shanghai History Museum on other days too.  Spent our nights at O'Malleys Irish Pub, and went to a club where kickboxing was performed on stage between dancing.  They even allowed people from  the audience to go a round with a professional kickboxer.  The authentic Chinese food was none other than the best-- dumplings, won ton soup, and spring rolls.  I found that the people in China were just completely ignorant, and impatient with everything.  Was happy to get back to Bangkok, but  had to fly back up north to Beijing though, with a 3 hour layover and an additional 3 hour delay, to fly back south to Bangkok.
