The Story of the General

General Jones is not a general. George Morgan Jones was a friend of the founder of our school, some guy by the name of William Waugh Smith. So Jones' wife wants to put up some sort of monument to her husband's role in the founding of our school, and she really, really, dug this statue of some confederate general. Naturally, these two would come together outside of Moore Hall (formerly East Hall for those of you alumna before 1993) and form what is now known as General Jones. The actual Jones was not a general, and the actual general is unknown.

Interesting new facts uncovered recently show that the statue was cast by the brother of the guy who built Mt. Rushmore, supposedly, and that the statue was erected circa 1915. Interesting, but unsubstantiated.
