Breast Cancer Education and Awareness
Susan G. Who?
How is ZTA involved? Can Your Dad Get Breast Cancer?
In 1992, Zeta Tau Alpha adopted The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Education and Awareness foundation as the Fraternity's National Philanthropy.  At the 1996 International Convention, the Fraternity voted to increase ZTA's support of the breast cancer awareness by backing all the organizations committed to breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.  Each year, members distribute waterproof shower cards which identify how to perform breat self-examinations; volunteer at the Race for the Cure evenets nationwide; and co-sponsor the Survivor Program for the Race series.  For more information, please visit the Race for the Cure Website!
"Breast cancer is rare in men, affecting about one percent of American males.  In 2004, an estimated 1,450 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that 470 men will die of the disease.
The average age for male breast cancer is 60-70 years; the median ago reported in the study was 67 years.  Risk factos, diagnosis and treatments are similar for men when matched
to women by stage of diagnosis.  Pronosis is also similar when matched for stage.  Unfortunatelt, men are often diagnosed at a later stage when chance of survival is not as good.  This is believed to be due to a lack of awarness of the risk for male breast cancer."
