DEVELOPMENT OF SOLAR PV POWERED UV DISINFECTION SYSTEM FOR RURAL DRINKING WATER SUPPLY:

We have already stated that our Center has the broad objective of participating in various nationally identified socio- economic programs like alternate sources of energy, drinking water for all and sustainable development. The National Drinking Water Mission Department of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India sanctioned a prestigious project on Design and Development of Solar PV Power System and Studies on UV Water Disinfectant Plant to Rahul Multidisciplinary Research Centre.

The present work aims to design and develop a Solar PV powered system for the supply of safe and uninterrupted drinking water free of microbial contamination and is suitable for remote applications where power may or may not be always available during the day. This system would ensure supply of safe drinking water, as it would automatically cut off the output water supply unless all the criterion of safe water is met. This work is being done by RMRC under the guidance of Dr. Anil Kumar Pandey, Member- Secretary of the Center who is the Principal Investigator of the Project.

This project aims to develop a redundant system capable of running on AC, Solar as well as Battery Back-up power. It will be capable of delivering 900 liters of drinking water per hours. The system is being specially designed keeping in view the prevailing conditions in rural areas. Since the system is also capable of running on Solar power alone it is stand- alone type, relatively maintenance free and self-sustaining. As far as pay- back period of the system is concerned; if we take a conservative estimate of 10 hours of running of system and that water is sold at 5paisa per liters the systems pay-back period will be 300 days.
The work is in advanced stage of development and first Prototype is expected to be ready by December 2001.
