FCCJ Catalog Course Description

MAC 1105	College Algebra	3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: MAT 1033 with a grade of "C" or better or satisfactory score on the placement test. The major topics included in this course are linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations and inequalities; relations and functions; graphs; systems of equations and inequalities; exponential and logarithmic functions; and applications. A review of algebraic techniques is also included in this course as well as a review of polynomials, factoring, exponents, roots and radicals. MAC 1102 cannot substitute for this course. Three contact hours. A.A., A.S., A.A.S.

Course Requirements

HOMEWORK AND QUIZES

Homework will be assigned at the end of every section in the textbook (see the assignment sheet). Homework is due at the beginning of the next class session. Turn in the problems in bold. All homework and quiz assignments are worth 10 points. The best ten assignments will be added for the homework grade. Use the following guidelines when turning in work. Assignments that do not follow these guidelines might not be graded.

1. Put your name in the upper right hand corner
2. Under your name put the course (MAC 1105)
3. Under the course put the campus (South Campus)
4. Under the campus put the class time (8:30)
5. Each section should be on its own sheet
6. Put the section on the top line in the center
7. Label the problems clearly
8. Circle your answer

TESTS

There will be four tests and a final exam. Each test is worth 100 points and is comprehensive.

FINAL EXAM

The final exam is comprehensive and is worth 100 points.

MAKE-UP TESTS

I will only give makeup exams in extreme cases, which must be documented. Makeup exams must be completed prior to the next test.

GUIDELINES FOR TESTS

For the test, you can have pencil, paper, graph paper, calculator, and an eraser. You can show your work on the test or on your own paper. Use the following guidelines for turning in the test and scratch paper.

1. Your name in the upper right hand corner of every page, including the test.
2. Circle your answer on the scratch paper.
3. Turn in all scratch paper.
4. Each problem on the scratch paper must be clearly labeled.
5. Draw a line between each problem on the scratch paper.
6. Do not scribble out your work. Either erase or put a big X through it.

Incorrect problems that do not follow these guidelines might not receive partial credit.

Grade Calculation

I will take the top ten homework and quiz scores and add these together along with the test grades. This total is then divided by six and rounded.

Electronic Devices

All cellular or digital phones and pagers are to be turned off during the class.

Class structure

Since class time is valuable, I try to be as efficient as I can so that the students can get as much benefit as possible. So most of the classes will be structured as follows:

1. Roll is taken.
2. Papers handed back.
3. Answer questions (priority given on most recent material) 5 to 15 minutes.
4. New material.
5. Break (if needed).
6. New material.

If you are late and missed the roll call or did not get your papers back, wait until the break or after class.

I encourage questions and will answer as many as class time permits, but I also expect the students to refrain from excess talking during the class.
