What

The 2009 Laramie Daze will offer 4 official races, and 4 training events which will simulate race conditions (pre-printed maps, control descriptions, controls and punches, no assigned starts or results). For each of the events except for the One Cowboy Relay and the Rocky Mountain Goat, there will be an Orangish type course (intermediate length and difficulty), a Greenish type course (medium length, advanced difficulty), and something in the Reddish-Blueish spectrum (advanced length and difficulty.) The One Cowboy Relay will be a multiple loop, one person relay consisting of several short loops taken in different order (motala style) and one final loop that everyone has in common. The Rocky Mountain Goat will be a goat style race with a mass start and total length of about 12-13 kms; an Orangish type course will also be available for those who prefer something shorter.

In addition, there will be at least 5 other informal training sessions set up for those who want something more, with pre-marked maps, streamered controls and course suggestions (very much like the training sessions at the 2008 Laramie Daze), all included at no additional charge.

All events will take place in super fine, super fun orienteering terrains, featuring a mixture of variations on Granite, cloaked in pines, aspens, and short grass high altitude prairie. No poison ivy, no thorns, no wicked fight, and that's for sure!

The whole week will be done in as low key, informal fashion as possible.

For extra pleasure, joy, and otherworldly cowboyness, some of the maps will feature some newly mapped, virgin terrain, including new terrain at Remarkable Flats, The Toe, and Happy Jack.  The Pond is an essentially 100% brand new area.

Where

All events will take place in the Medicine Bow National Forest several miles east of Laramie. See overmap. Check back here later for detailed directions to each event. And take careful notes and/or make a copy of those directions once they appear, because we do not plan to put out any direction signs during the Daze! A free downloadable and printable map (very handy to have for the week) showing all the Forest Service roads by designation is available at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/mbr/recreation/travel_management/MVUM_Pole_Mtn_2009.pdf

All directions begin from Exit 323 off I-80 (Visitors Center exit), about 9 miles east of Laramie and up the hill, and assume you are approaching from Laramie.  Look for the large Lincoln Head (take out a penny if you’re not sure—it looks a lot like that)!

One additional word of warning: vandals are frequently damaging, destroying, or otherwise removing road signs, so it will pay to be on your toes with regards to following these directions.

Aug 31, Plains of Despair Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 6.3 miles, and turn right onto Forest Service road 707.  Follow 707 for about 1.2 miles to the vicinity of a sharp bend in the road, and park there.

Sept 1, The Pond Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 2.3 miles, turn left onto Forest Service road 712A and stay straight at top of hill to 712AA (don’t turn left off of road and go through cattle gate).  Follow 712AA to parking.  Total distance on 712A and 712AA is about .8 miles to parking.

Sept 2, The One Cowboy Relay—yeehaw!: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 2.7 miles, turn left onto Forest Service road 712.  Follow 712 for 2.1 miles and turn right at the t-intersection, staying on 712, follow 712 for .3 miles to next intersection and turn left, staying on 712.  Continue east on 712 for about 1.8 miles to a 4-way intersection with 712E and 714. Park on south side of the intersection, off of 712E.

Sept 3, Bisbee Hill Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 2.7 miles, turn left onto Forest Service road 712.  Follow 712 for 2.1 miles and turn right at the t-intersection, staying on 712, follow 712 for .3 miles to next intersection with 701.  Stay straight to pick up 701, and follow 701 south for about 1.9 miles to the junction with 701D, and park in vicinity of the junction.

Sept 4, The Toe Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear right, to follow the frontage road that continues past the Visitors Center.  Follow the frontage road (which turns to dirt and becomes Forest Service road 705) through the cattle gate, heading southeast for about 3.7 miles to the Wallis Picnic area.  Park there (fee area) or nearby along 705.

Sept 5, Pelican Bay Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 8.2 miles, and turn right onto Forest Service road 707A.  Follow 707A about .3 miles to fork, bear left on 707AA, and follow for about .4 miles to parking in a clearing.  Note that as 707AA enters the woods, that uphill section of road is rutted and not in great shape; depending on what you’re driving, you might choose to park before the woods and walk the last little bit to the Start/Finish.  Most cars should be able to make it OK, however.

Sept 6, Happy Jack Day: exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear right, to follow the frontage road that continues past the Visitors Center.  Follow the frontage road (which turns to dirt and becomes Forest Service road 705) through the cattle gate, heading southeast for about 2.6 miles to the intersection with 705J and park.

Sept 7, the Rocky Mountain Goat at Remarkable Flats: Pelican Bay Day: take exit 323, drive north over the interstate, and bear left onto WY 210 (the Happy Jack Road).  Take WY 210 east towards Cheyenne for about 8.2 miles, and turn left onto Forest Service road 708, passing through a gated cattle fence (please close the gate behind you), and continue about 400 meters to parking.

When

Early September, on dates as given above. These dates have been chosen to take advantage of the 3 day Labor Day weekend, and an absence of any annoying insects and pestilence. This period is normally just about the best, most consistent running weather of the year.

How

To register, make a copy of the following or write out by hand, and complete the requested information, enclose your entry fee (make checks payable to Laramie Range Orienteering Club), and mail to: Mikell Platt, 1151 Inca Dr., Laramie, WY 82072. We will have you sign a waiver once you show up at the Daze.

Entry fee for entire Laramie Daze if postmarked by April 7: Adults--$30, Juniors (18 and younger)--$20. If postmarked after April 7 but on or before Aug 14: Adults--$40, Juniors--$30. If after Aug 14, add a $10 late fee and note that we do not guarantee pre-marked maps for late entries.

You may also enter by the day, at the rate of $10/day if postmarked by Aug 14, and for $15/day for late entries.

You can also just show up unannounced, pay a whole lot of money at what will amount to exhorbitant ransom rates that would make even swarthy pirates or milky skinned young maidens blush, and hope and pray there might be some extra maps, somehow, someway. But be prepared for bitter disappointments, and a consignment to many runs at the Plains of Despair.

You can also order preview maps if you like (see overview map for various map names) by throwing in some extra money, and listing the map names you desire. If the amount looks fair enough to us, then we will mail the maps. Otherwise, we will keep the money and use it to buy delicious pizza and ice cold Mountain Dew, and we will think of you while we are having dinner.
