As the season ends.. 2003 was not what was expected in San Diego. It was obvious early, that the Padres would not be able to compete. So a quick re-tooling, that included salary cuts was the result. Gone are, Henry Rodriguez, Jeff Kent, Jon Lieber, John Yun, Sean Casey, and Oscar Beebe. New to San Diego are, Jeremy Quistberg, Joe Kunkel, Matt Lawton, and Rene Morino. In the process payroll was cut $14 Million. The season preview... The Padres were very aggressive in free agent signings. After several seasons of spinning their wheels and reducing payroll. San Diego is close to competing. They aren't there yet. But this season should be the biggest step toward the top so far. The goal is to win 90 games! Big goal since this team has yet to reach .500 |
