Edward Wells was the Master (Certificate of Competency C 1314) of the Lizzie Wright from July 17, 1879 (at the age of 23) until April 24, 1890. During that time the Lizzie Wright embarked on 26 voyages, mostly between Europe and North America. He joined the Lizzie Wright in New York for the return voyage to Rouen, from whence the voyage had begun on Thursday May 8, 1879, with Edmund Harris O'Neil as Master (Certificate of Competency C 219). O'Neil had been Master of the Lizzie Wright for only her 13th and 14th voyages. George Wright had been the first Master (Certificate of Competency B90953) of the Lizzie Wright and held this position for the first 12 voyages, beginning in Rockland, New Brunswick on Monday Dec 2, 1872 when the ship departed for Liverpool GB, arriving on Thursday Jan 9, 1873.
The Lizzie Wright was a barque, with 1 deck and 3 masts, 176 feet in length, 35 ft wide and 21 feet in depth. Her gross tonnage was 958 and the net tonnage was 839. She was built in 1872 in Rockland (45o 54' 00'' N - 64o 33' 00" W), a locale that does not appear on any current maps of New Brunswick, but was in the vicinity of Pointe-de-Bute (latitude - longitude 45o 54' 00'' N - 61o 15' 00" W) and Sackville (45o 55' 07'' N - 64o 23' 09" W). She was registered in Saint John New Brunswick in the same year with registry number J872096 and official number 066859. She was sold in Porsgrunn Norway in 1890 and renamed the Dovre. There are no further records in the database.
The original owner was Robert Chapman, a shipbuilder from Rockland. The shipbuilder is not listed in the records, but it may well be Robert Chapman, as he was listed as the original owner of a number of vessels. (Village Belle, 1860; Swan, 1861; Edward Barron, 1861; Cavour 1864; Capella, 1866; Leona 1866; Robert Godfrey, 1868; Vesta, 1872; Lizzie Wright, 1872; William Dobson, 1873; Mary E Chapman 1873) (the first 6 were built in Dorchester, the remaining 6 were built in Rockland)
The next vessel of which Edward Wells was the Master was the W.W. McLauchlan (Official Number 100070), described as a Barque, gross tonnage 517, net tonnage 458, 1 deck, 3 masts, 160 foot length, 33 foot width, and 13 foot depth, built in Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick in 1891. The original owner was Warren Dixon, a shipbuilder. He is listed as the owner of four vessels in the database, all built at Hopewell Cape. (Maud Pye, 1883; Harry W Lewis, 1889; W.W. McLauchlan, 1891; Gladys McLauchlan, 1892)
Edward Wells joined the ship on its first voyage on Wednesday September 21, 1892 and left on Monday August 11, 1902, at the completion of its 6th voyage. There is no record of other voyages or Masters for this ship, but the vessel was lost at sea in 1909 at Forcados off the western coast of Africa. The record appears to be incomplete. On the first voyage there is no record of ports of call. There is a three year gap between the second voyage which terminated in Belfast Friday 8, 1893 and the third voyage which commenced in Preston Great Britain on October 6, 1896.

A fully searchable CD containing data on the vessels, captains and crews of Atlantic Canada, 1787-1936.
This CD contains information on the shipping industry of Atlantic Canada, derived from two British record series, structured as three interactive databases that allow the user to search, sort and query the data.
The first database is compiled from the Certificates of Registry for 10 major ports of Atlantic Canada: Miramichi, Richibucto and Saint John in New Brunswick; Halifax, Sydney, Pictou, Windsor and Yarmouth in Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and St. John's, Newfoundland, from 1787 to 1936 (outside dates). It contains information on the vessels registered at each port and on their owners. Shipping registers for the port of Bermuda are also included on the database.
The second database is compiled from the crew agreements of vessels registered in the ports of Saint John, New Brunswick; Yarmouth, Windsor and Halifax, Nova Scotia for the period 1863-1914. This file contains information on the masters and seafarers who crewed the vessels, their ports of call and voyages. In total the file contains information on 182,000 seafarers and 20,000 masters of Atlantic Canadian vessels.
A third database contains a one per cent sample of crew agreements from non-Canadian (British) vessels which was compiled for comparative purposes. The data is arranged in the same format as the file described above and contains 85,000 records of individual seamen and 19,000 records of masters.
These databases were originally created for the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project, a major research project undertaken by maritime historians at Memorial University over a six year period from 1976 to 1982.
