Malayan Tapir

The baby Malayan Tapir |
The
Malayan Tapir is a relative of the rhinoceroses and those in Singapore
are suspected to have come from Malaysia. Although villagers on Pulau
Ubin have, for many years, been aware of the presence of a pair of
tapirs on the island, a photograph, taken in 1986, is the only evidence
of the animal's occurrence in Singapore.
Of the pair of tapirs once seen
in Pulau Ubin, one is believed to have reportedly died
falling off the cliff at the Ubin Granite Quarry.
The carcass was subsequently buried there.
Its partner was never seen again.
Hopefully, it had swam back to Johor. |
