Tanjong Chek Jawa
Currently the hottest and latest environmental issue in Singapore is the proposed and to be carried out reclamation of Tanjong Chek Jawa, a (and perhaps the only) site in Singapore that houses a myriad of communities in unison. The various habitats - rocky shore, beach, mangrove, mud flats, sand flats, sandbars and sea grass line the coast, and a benthic habitat lies beyond the lagoon, and with the very differing organisms to be found in each habitat, Tanjong Chek Jawa is a huge treasure trove for all to see and treasure.
However, this beautiful environment may cease to exist in the future. It has been slated for land reclamation, and the dumping of sand on this fragile place may well cause the organisms there to die out due to their adaptation problems. Tanjong Chek Jawa is extremely rich, and the destruction of this place may well mean that we lose a few precious species that we rarely knew beforehand and even lose the chance for future generations to see such a collection of species in their natural habitat in Singapore.
