Biographical Information:

  • Born Konigshutee, Germany Dec 24, 1906
  • German born, American composer
  • Completed musical studies in Dresden and Berlin
  • Supported himself by playing piano in a nightclub while in school
  • 1929 he was hired to arrange and conduct Frederick Hollander's score of the Blue Angel, the success of which brought him to Los Angeles to produce additional films
  • Arrived in Hollywood just as film music was developing as an art
  • His first original film score, The Bride of Frankenstein 1935
  • Worked on 144 films received 12 academy award nominations winning twice
  • He also did concert works: Song of Terezin which was his last composition
  • Also a gifted conductor, Waxman founded the Los Angeles International Music Festival in 1948
  • He was the 1st American to conduct music in the Soviet Union
