Biographical Information: Born November 23, 1933 in Debica, Poland Father played violin and piano but was a lawyer by trade Witnessed WWII firsthand as a child, the atrocities he saw left a lasting impression on Penderecki Studied composition with Franciszek Skoyszewski, and then later with Malawski and Wiechowicz at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow. Later taught at the same school. First major musical success was in 1959 when Strofy, Emanacje, and Psalmy Dawida won top prize in a competition for Polish composers.
