Biographical Information:

  • Born November 23, 1933 in Debica, Poland
  • Father played violin and piano but was a lawyer by trade
  • Witnessed WWII firsthand as a child, the atrocities he saw left a lasting impression on Penderecki
  • Studied composition with Franciszek Skoyszewski, and then later with Malawski and Wiechowicz at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow. Later taught at the same school.
  • First major musical success was in 1959 when Strofy, Emanacje, and Psalmy Dawida won top prize in a competition for Polish composers.
