Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube with Diagrams – R. Mackwani

* RHS/LHS = Right/Left Hand Side.  X = Remains Unchanged.  r = RotateD.  FV=Front View; TV=Top View.
* Cube Faces (Sides) used: F=Front, R=Right, L=Left, T=Top (Upper). [...]=Acronym for the Move Sequence.
* Rotation: CW=Clockwise, CCW=Counter-clockwise. S+=Turn Side S 90° CW, S- =Turn Side S 90° CCW, S2 =Turn Side S 180°.
* "Rotate" means to re-orient a piece, keeping its location. "Swap" means for two or more pieces to exchange places.
  "Move" means to change the location of one piece while disregarding what goes in its original location.

Step 1 -- Do the First Layer on your own:
Solve one face, getting first all edge pieces and then all corner peices in their correct locations/orientations.
First you do a Cross such that the side colors match the ones of the central pieces of the Middle Layer.
Next you complete the layer by similarly placing the corner-cubes in their correct locations/orientations.
If you cannot do this on your own, then you are not ready for the solution below. Check the web for other sites.

Place the cube with the competed layer on the bottom. I usually do Yellow face first. Your cube should look like this:

The basic Move Sequences A thru G that you need to solve the Cube are Right Hand moves. Also listed for some are their complements i.e. the Left hand move sequences denoted by ' (as A’) which are at times helpful to speed up the solution. During move sequences below, it is important to start with the correct face on the front (as FV) depending on the sequence and the piece(s) you want to locate/orient. During the sequence follow the movement of the Yellow piece(s) to help you remember the sequence. In every sequence the first few moves are specific to the sequence, while the end moves are merely to restore the Yellow face. So keep an eye on the Yellow pieces. Step 2 -- Set the 4 Middle Layer Edge Pieces Find an Edge Piece on Top Layer that belongs to the Middle Layer; rotate Top Layer to move this piece to line up with its side color matching as shown, then do A or A'. A > T+ R+ T- R- F+ R- F- R+ (moves FT to FR, same color on FV) [T color of FT should be RHS color] A’ > T- L- T+ L+ F- L+ F+ L- (moves FT to FL, same color on FV) [T color of FT should be LHS color] The applets below show the total number of moves, eg 0/8, for the sequence listed; however the controls do let you go beyond the maximum number of moves to complete the sequence; so you need to be careful as you click.

Seq A: T+ R+ T- R- F+ R- F- R+

Seq A': T- L- T+ L+ F- L+ F+ L-

If a Middle Layer Edge Piece is wrongly oreinted, then bring any Top Layer Edge Piece in its place first using A or A'. When all 4 Middle Layer Edge Pieces are set, your cube should look like this:

Step 3 -- Form a Cross on Last (Top) Layer with 4 Edge Pieces on top matching the Top Face Color Rotate the top layer so that maximum number of Edge Pieces are in their correct location (orientation may be off), then do B or B' or C or C' as many times as required to form the Cross - their sides may not be matching. B [T/T]> R+ T+ R- T- R- F+ R+ F- T+ (rotates TF; swaps TL & TB, TB also rotates on moving to TL; TR=X) C [T2/T2]> R+ T2 R- T2 R- F+ R+ F- T+ (rotates TF & TL; swaps TR & TB) In the applets below I start with the completed Cross on the Top Layer to give you a better visual understanding of what you get at the end of the move sequence listed.

Seq B: R+ T+ R- T- R- F+ R+ F- T+

Seq C: R+ T2 R- T2 R- F+ R+ F- T+

Step 4 -- Move the 4 Edge Pieces on top to form a Cross whose side colors match their corresponding side faces Rotate the top layer so that one Edge Piece is in correct location then do D or D' as many times as required to form the Cross with their sides matching - you will have to change the piece in X position to suit the CW or CCW move. D [T2/TT]> R+ T2 R- T- R+ T- R- (TF=X; swaps TR, TL & TB CW – No rotation) D’ [T2/TT]> L- T2 L+ T+ L- T+ L+ (TF=X; swaps TL, TR & TB CCW – No rotation)

Seq D: R+ T2 R- T- R+ T- R-

Seq D': L- T2 L+ T+ L- T+ L+

Step 5 -- Position the 4 Top Face Corner Pieces First get one corner piece in correct position (and orientation if possible). Keep this in X location and then go on. E > R+ T- L- T+ R- T- L+ T+ (Swaps TFR, TBR & TBL CCW; TFL=X) [FYI: Pieces flip 90° on side axis perpendicular to arrow… E’ > L- T+ R+ T- L+ T+ R- T- (Swaps TFL, TBL & TBR CW; TFR=X) … Diagonal move => 2 side flips against the arrows.] Do E or E’ to get one Corner Piece in its correct location (orientation may be off). Then keep this in X position and do E or E’ to set the other 3 pieces in position. In the applets below I start with the completed Cube to give you a better visual understanding of what you get at the end of the move sequence listed.

Seq E: R+ T- L- T+ R- T- L+ T+

Seq E': L- T+ R+ T- L+ T+ R- T-

Step 6 -- Rotate corner pieces to match colors F [TT/T2]> R+ T+ R- T+ R+ T2 R- and L- T- L+ T- L- T2 L+ (TFR=X; TBR=X; rotates TFL CCW & TBL CW along its diagonal) G [T2/TT]> R+ T2 R- T- R+ T- R- and L- T2 L+ T+ L- T+ L+ (TFL=X; TBL=X; rotates TFR CCW & TBR CW along its diagonal) F and G are actually a combination of 2 move sequences each with a Right Hand Seq followed by Left Hand Seq. In the applets below I start with the completed Cube to give you a better visual understanding of what you get at the end of the move sequence listed.

Seq F: R+ T+ R- T+ R+ T2 R- and L- T- L+ T- L- T2 L+

Seq G: R+ T2 R- T- R+ T- R- and L- T2 L+ T+ L- T+ L+
