(This synopsis of Back To School Night is not meant to replace a personal greeting and a friendly hello. Hopefully it wll be used as a refresher or perhaps it can be of service to a newly transferred student.)
Overview of School Year This year is a very important year for Second Graders. This year the children will be making the Sacraments of Reconcilation and First Holy Communion. I am very excited about the upcoming year.
Homework Homework is given Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the homework assignment is to go to Church on Sunday and prepare for school on Monday by checking supplies, sharpening pencils, and bringing back your library book. Please do not allow your child to do pages in their workbook that have not been assigned. Those pages will be done in class along with the rest of the classroom.
Tests, Quizzes and Grades There is a Math test every Friday. Spelling tests will be given every Friday until approximately the end of October. After this point, the spelling tests will be given every other Friday consisting of 20 words instead of ten. All others tests will be announced at least three days in advance (except phonics, because it is a review of classroom work). Most Religion and ILA tests are fill-in-the-blank and have word banks. ABC order is also part of the tests. Although it is an important part of the curriculum, there are no Science or Social Studies tests in 2nd grade.Terra Nova testing is usually in March and takes place over a three day period. You will be notified in advance when the testing will take place so that your child is prepared with plenty of #2 pencils.
Rewards and Discipline Discipline: I will mark the Daily Progress Reports with either an "S" or an "I." If there is a continual problem, the student will write the rule he/she broke.
Addressing Your Questions & Concerns If you have any questions or concerns, please write me a note and send it in with your child. I am happy to make evening phone calls or set up an appointment to meet in person.
In Conclusion We plan to have lots of fun this year. In order to accomplish this goal, all rules must be followed on a regular basis. Again, if there is anything you feel I should know that will help me understand and relate to your child, let me know.
