After James Alexander Tate's death, Sarah married William T. Gentry. He had come to the Mountain Grove area in 1854. Somehow he became involved with Union persons in skirmishes and was captured and taken to Springfield, MO to the Federal Stockade where he was held. Later, when released, he came home to find that his wife, Sarah had died.

An Excerpt from The History of Cooper County by W F Johnson 1919

William T. Tally, a veteran of the Civil War and a substantial retired farmer of Cooper County was born on a farm in Saline Township, Oct. 14 1839 son of Henderson and Mary Ann (Taylor) Tally, the former a native of Tennessee, born Jan 6, 1811 and the latter of Kentucky born Feb. 10, 1816. They were married in this county Dec 15, 1836 and spent the remainder of their lives here. Henderson Tally died in 1887. He and his wife were the parents of six children: Mrs. Louisa Hopkins, deceased; William T.; Judge James P. Tally, Pilot Grove; Mrs. Mary Woods, deceased; Marion C., deceased and Mrs. Catherine Newlin a widow, Boonville.

William T. Tally received his schooling in the primitive schools of the time and was living at home when the Civil War broke out. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union cause for two years and was attached to Company F, Fifth Regiment, Missouri State Militia. At the end of his two years he re-enlisted and went to the front as a member of Company I, Twelfth Missouri Cavalry, serving with Sherman's army. Nov. 24 1864, in the battle of Franklin, his horse was shot from under him and he was taken prisoner and sent to the Confederate prison at Andersonville GA., where he remained until the close of the war and was mustered out under a general order, April 29, 1865.

During a visit home on furlough in the summer of 1863, Mr. Tally had married and upon his return home, after his long military service, he resumed farming in Saline Township, where he owned a farm of 120 acres. He added to his holding, and from time to time was the owner of several farms in this county. In 1903, Mr. Tally disposed of his farm holdings and moved to Boonville, where he since has made his home at 1026 Fifth Street. Mr Tally is an ardent Republican, but has not been a seeker after office. He is a member of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic.

August 14 1863, William T Tally was united in marriage to Louisa A. Tate, who was born in Warren County Tenn., Dec 22, 1845, daughter of Jahiel Douglas Tate and Sarah (Price) Tate, the former of whom was born in that county and the latter in Jackson County, ALA., who came with their family to Missouri in 1852 and settled on a farm in Texas County where they spent the remainder of their lives. Douglas Tate and wife were the parents of 11 children of whom Mrs. Tally was the fourth in order of birth. Mr. & Mrs. Tally have six children: William A., Boonville, Alice, wife of A. L. Durnil, Saline township; Joseph D., Boonville; Charles E., of Excelsior Springs; Oscar F., a railway mail clerk of Kansas City and Hattie E., widow of David A Snyder, resides with her parents in Boonville. Mrs. Snyder has three children, two daughters and a son, the latter of whom, Oscar E. Snyder, enlisted in the aviation corps of the National Army January 25 1918, and was assigned to Camp Sevier, NC C., where after a period of training, he was made a first class sergeant and in March 1918 sailed for overseas service and is still (spring of 1919) in France.

P. M. Tate died Thursday morning, March 12, 1914 at his home two miles southeast of Bluejacket, about 70 years old. Leaves wife and 15 children, 12 by a previous marriage. He is buried in Afton Cemetery.

In an email dated February 15, 2001, his great grandson, Sonny Tate reported "Phil's daughter, Lydia, signed the guest register at the funeral as Mrs. Anna Mathias. Daughter, Julia, signed in as Mrs. A. J. Watson in John B. Tate's funeral register under the "relatives attending" section. It is thought by this Tate that Mary E. and Philander are probably two of the deceased that preceded their father in death."

"This part of the family moved to California shortly after Philander's death. Fred still lived in California in 1977. These three Tates were probably born in Kelso, OK (Indian Territory). It wasn't exactly a town, I don't think, but I could be wrong. More of a rail head I think. Philander owned or lived on our family farm there where I was raised. Kelso had some stock or cattle pens, grain elevator, general store and a school house, horse barn. The school served as the Kelso Baptist Church until late the late 1980's when local vandals destroyed it, shot it all up with automatic weapons then set fire to it. Sad testament to our local youth! That farm has been in our family for about 80 of the last 100 years one way or another. My mother Elizabeth, my son Jeff and his family still live there. Kelso is about halfway between Vinita and Bluejacket, Craig County, OK."

The state of Missouri was torn by differing politics during the Civil War. Julia A. Tate married John M. Boyles who fought for the Confederacy. Her older sister, Louisa A. Tate married William T. Tally who fought for the Union and was eventually imprisoned by the Confederacy at Andersonville, GA.

On Julia Death Certificate from the Department of Health - Division of Vital Statistics, State of Illinois, there appear to be some errors. It states that her father was John Tate and that she was born in Boonville, MO. This seems to be incorrect. Other documentation indicates that her father was Jahiel Douglas Tate and that she was born in Sherrill, Texas County, MO. The informant on the Death Certificate was her son, Stanley Boyles.

His military service was in the " War between the States" (Civil War) from 1861 to June 14, 1865. He was in Company "F", Elliott's Regiment, Jackman's Brigade, Shelby's Division.

He was buried in a cemetery designated for Confederate Soldiers in Kirksville, MO on September 30, 1921. (This information comes from a Certified Copy of the Original Certificate of Death, Missouri State Board of Health).

He fought in the following battles: Paris, Boonville, Vera Cruce, Baterville, Brurswiek. He applied for admission to the Confederate Home of Missouri at Higginsville, MO sometime around 1907. His application states he had a "lame arm" and he suffered from Catarrh. (This information comes from his Application for Admission to the Confederate Home of Missouri, at Higginsville, MO, and other Confederate Home Records. Not sure of the spellings of the battles).

In October, 1999 in a telephone conversation I had with Joe Boyles (Joseph Owen Boyles, son of Owen Boyles), he told me that his father used to tell the story of his father's (John M.'s) military induction. The story recited to him says that John M. Boyles, aged 19 years, was plowing corn in a field on his farm when he was approached by several Confederate soldiers who were walking through the field. They told in no uncertain terms that he was to go with them. He felt that they were forcing him and went along rather than face their threats. When he was able to return home four years later, he returned by riding a riverboat that dropped him off. He talked of cooking flapjacks on the smokestack of the riverboat.

Tate as the children, and Agness Boyd, Fannie Nunley, Mary Northcutt and Lucy Northcutt are the grandchildren and only heirs at law of the said J. J. Tate, deceased and Frank Boyd is the husband of Agness Boyd and John Creighton is the husband of Mary Creighton and J. J. Nunley is the husband of Fannie Nunley, on motion of K. P. He was a Corporal in Company H. of the 35th Infantry in the confederate Army and served during the Civil War. He was wounded in the wrist and side during the battle of Shiloh. At the time of his second marriage he was rather an old man, and it was said that the only reason the young lady married him was that he was getting a pension and she wanted the money. After a while, Hattie S. Tate, his daughter and my grandmother brought him home to her own house and cared for him until his death in 1908.
