| In deed book D, page 21 and 21, 7 Nov 1853, Jane M. Tanner, executrix of Thomas L. Tanner, sold lot of land 184, 10th district, to John Wigley for $50.00. It was witnessed by James Worthington and recorded by James M. Hall, Clerk. On the same page, deed dated 7 Nov 1853, John Wigley sold to Harvey Walker for $100.00 on a quit claim deed, "had or may have had two-seventh part of lot of land lot 184, 10th district". Signed John Wigley. No witness, recorded by James M. Hall, Clerk on Dec 15, 1853. Thomas Tanner was said to have been the first white man in Dade County. I don't know when he came to Dade County, but do know of another white man who was here in the 1820's. I went back to check on land purchased by Thomas Tanner and found where he purchased land around 184 (including 185 and others) but NOT 184. Since the courthouse burned in April 1853, all of the deeds that were recorded with dates prior to April 1853 were recorded or recorded late. I checked the Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery (1832) and land lot 184, 10th district was awarded to a James B. Head of Gwinnett County GA. Very few of those who won land in north Georgia on this land lottery actually came to the area. Instead they sold the property to someone who wanted to come here or to a land dealer. Most were sold to land dealers. So whatever happened to that land did so after 1832. When did Joseph Tate and Thomas Tanner purchase it, I don't know, as there was nothing recorded prior to Jane Tanner selling as stated above. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Deed Book F., Page 107: State of Georgia, County of Dade Petitioner: Jas L. Though he was of the first family of James Tate, (and Ruth), he was very fond of the second family. After his wife, Jane died, when she was only 45 years old, (and was buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Warren County) Elan moved to Decatur County in 1870. It is assumed that Elan and his family went and lived in Decatur County because Elizabeth (James second wife) went there to live with the Bost family in her later years. Born on the old Tate-Burdine plantation, about 15 miles from Lebanon, Russell County, VA. He was mentioned in his father, Joseph Tate's estate papers, on May 22, 1843, William Tate with John W. Owens and Elisha Tate, a third part. William Tate is indebted to Elisha Tate admin. of the Joseph Tate estate. On March 22, 1844 he sold to John W. Owens the tract of land his father Joseph lived on in his lifetime, 177 acres to John W. Owens, witnessed by John Fugate, John Tate and all three signed the deed. After 1850 he and his wife moved to Hancock County, TN where they were living in 1870 next door to their son, Elisha Tate and family. Reference: Russell County, VA Will Book. JAMES DOUGLAS4 TATE (JOHN3, ROBERT (JR.)2, ROBERT (SR.)1) was born 1837, and died Unknown. He married MARY JANE MCGREGOR January 13, 1858. She was born 1836, and died Unknown. Notes for JAMES DOUGLAS TATE: Riverside Cemetery, Warren County, TN: Tate. J.D. 21 May 1839-20 Aug 1902 James Douglas "Dug", son of Douglas and Sarah (Price) Tate, husband of Mary Jane McGregor Tate, Mary Jane 24 Sep 1835-3 Oct 1911 [Daughter of Ezekiel and Mary (McGee) McGregor, wife of James Douglas "Dug" Tate, married 13 January 1858] This marriage is recorded in Marriage Book A, Page 45. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In going through the Tate book, I found this individual's history quite confusing. The book says that this James Douglas is the son of John Tate, b ca 1783, (brother of our Alexander). It also shows his mother as Leddicia (Dicey) Hogg, b 1783. It is hard for me to believe that Dicey had this son when she was over 50. But, the book says they were in Warren County, TN at the time that this James was born and married. Maybe there was a second wife that is not recorded. Some other researchers suspect that this individual did not exist, but is a confusion. The book also mentions that he may have been the James to settle in Barry Co, MO. (At this point, I believe the author confused this James with Jahiel's John Douglas who the book says: "..married Mary E. Westfall, born 1844 in Missouri, a daughter of Naomi Westfall, born 1808 in Virginia who was living with the family in the 1880 Barry County, MO Census". Reference: Clyde E. Durnil, Fed. Census 1850 Warren County, TN, page 43-266; 1880 Berry County, MO In reference to the Riverside Cemetery and Marriage Book records, we know that Jahiel had a James Alexander and a John Douglas, I'm not aware of any James Douglas. Jahiel's John Douglas only lived in Warren County until he was about 11 years old when the whole family moved to Texas County, MO. Notes from Ricki Wilkins Child of JAMES TATE and MARY MCGREGOR is: i. MARTHA5 TATE, b. 1859; d. Unknown. 51.
