LYDIA ANN6 SHANKLE (MARTHA JANE5 TATE, ROBERT HOOD4, AARON3, ROBERT (JR.)2, ROBERT (SR.)1) was born December 04, 1870, and died December 19, 1941 in Dallas, Dallas County, TX. She married RAYMOND COOKE December 06, 1888 in Fleming Community, Comance County, TX by Rev. C. C. McCurdy, son of ALEXANDER COOKE and ELEANOR SHAPARD. He was born November 20, 1866 in Hempstead, Waller County, TX, and died January 06, 1919 in Gustine, Comanche County, TX. Notes for LYDIA ANN SHANKLE: From the Compilation of Genealogy Records of Robert Hood Tate by Billie Bailey, January 2001 (in part)....She was "Mama" to me, probably because Mother called her that, too. She had beautiful white, naturally curly hair for as long as I can remember. In the tintype picture we have, it appeared to be light brown when she was young. She had blue eyes and fair skin, and was pleasingly plump as seen in pictures. I have no way of knowing how tall she was, but she wasn't as tall as my Mother, who was 5'9". I was twelve when she died. She and my mother lived together and after I was born, she took care of me while Mother worked. She could sew and had an old treadle sewing machine. To open it for sewing, the top opened and lifted the machine out to make a work table. I would lie on top of that and take a nap when she sewed. The soothing noise always made me sleepy. While we were living on Ewing, Mother remarried. "Mama" lived with us a while, but when Aunt Lou Ella, came to Dallas, she moved in with her on Elmore. I remember one holiday, either Christmas or New Years, when I was fairly small, Mother had bought some fireworks. I never liked the firecrackers or anything loud, so she had bought me some Roman Candles and sparklers. I kept begging "mama" to shoot off some of the Roman Candles, but because it was very cold, she decided to light one and open the window and shoot it off through it. She lit it, but didn't quite get the window open before it started going off. Balls of fire were going off all in the room, and one or two landed on the bed and burned a hole in the quilt. So far as I know, no one knew that "Mama" dipped snuff until she moved in with Aunt Lou Ella. Aunt Lou Ella also dipped snuff and would buy some for "Mama", too. But "Mama" would never dip in front of Aunt Lou Ella. When she died, her little snuff can was in her apron pocket. I remember very little about when "Mama" died. I just remember that we went to the house and "Mama" was i bed. I remember Mother telling me that she was very sick. Mother put me to bed and I remember thinking that "Mama" would be alright in the morning. Mother came in later, and work me and told me that "Mama" had died. I went in and saw her before the funeral home came to get her. The funeral home was just a few doors down Denley Drive from where "Mama" and Aunt Lou Ella lived. I certainly have very good memories of her, but I think that something that Mother wrote about her was a very good tribute. In some of Mother's papers about what little she knew about the family history, she had written: "Mama" was never known to say a bad word about anyone." Source: Mae Evelyn "Bitsie" (McDaniel) Hendrex, daughter of Grace (Cooke) McDaniel, granddaughter of Lydia Ann (Shankle) Cooke) "Mamma took with a sick stomach and Tuesday evening and about 10:00 PM that night got up and seemed to loose use of herself. I got her in a chair and after about an hour she still couldn't move. I called Hope, they came and just as we got her on the bed, she fainted. We called the doctor and the next day he said he didn't think she would ever walk again. For three days she was almost helpless but began to improve and got able to walk with a cane and a little help. We left the light on at night for three weeks. But that night she seemed to feel so much better and insisted on putting the light out. But next evening about 5 o'clock, she took real sick at her stomach again and about 9 had the hardest chill or rigor. Robert stayed till 2 o'clock and she seemed to be resting. He went home but Grace stayed all night, but early next morning we knew she was so much worse. We called Robert and Hope. They came, also phoned "Cap" (Loyd) and Leora. When the doctor came out about 10 o'clock, he said her time was short. The boys had gone on to work. We called them. "Cap" and Leora and Iona (Grace) got here about 2:30 Wednesday evening the 18th of December. Mamma died Thursday morning at 10 minutes till 1 o'clock; was carried to Smith & Lamar funeral home and on to the Albin Cemetery in Comanche County and buried beside Papa on Saturday, December 20, 1941. Papa died June 6, 1919. Source: Copied from a note written by daughter, Ella (Lou Ella) soon after Mamma's death. More About LYDIA ANN SHANKLE: Burial: December 20, 1941, Albin Cemetery, Comanche County, TX Notes for RAYMOND COOKE: From the Compilation of Genealogy Records of Robert Hood Tate by Billie Bailey, January 2001 Raymond and Lydia bought a farm ("the old Cooke homestead") in Gustine in 1904 and farmed it until Raymond died in 1919. There was no road into the property, you had to go through the Caraway Ranch to get to it. Lydia and their son, Robert, and his wife, Vida and their children, Hollis and Marie lived there for several years before Robert and family moved to Dallas. Lydia continued living there until about 1928 when she sold it their son Loyd "Cap" and his wife Leora (Randerson) Cooke. Cap and Leora remodeled the old farm house and lived there until about 1950. The farm was located five miles east of Gustine. Source: Hollis Cooke, November 1989) "Raymond and Lydia's children went to school at Farmers Chapel and later at Gustine school. I used to play at the farm, down in the lower pasture by the creek. It was an old Indian Burial Ground and I made my playhouse of of Indian arrow heads." Raymond and Lydia's son, Loyd Cooke and his wife, Leora (Randerson) Cooke bought the old homestead and they sold the old place in either 1968 or 1969. In 1992, Hollis and Billie went to see it and found out that a new owner had bought it and torn it down.
