Instructional Objectives:
- To be able to name sounds of the Navajo alphabet with 100% accuracy.
- To be able to construct oral sentences completely with 100% accuracy.
- To able to make oral explanations of experiences with 100% accuracy.
- To be able to explain concepts learned with 90% oral fluency.

Activities:
- All children will be given a test of language dominance. All initial instruction for letter
recognition and pre-reading skills will be carried out using the Native alphabet.
Continuing activities will include formation of words using the Navajo alphabet.
- All children will engage in verbal interactions with peers to facilitate growth in oral
production.
- All children will participate in the following activities to promote growth in oral production:
Example of some of the other activities I do:
- Show-Tell � Students bring in an art project that they made with their family members.
- Singing � Listen to the CD and learn and practice singing the song.
- Drama � see attachment
- Dances � Discuss different types of dances and color pictures from a color book.
- Storytelling � Bring in a consultant to tell Coyote stories to the students
- Native Arts/Crafts Projects
- Cooking � Teach students how to make fry bread. Teacher brings in all ingredients for
the fry bread. Teacher makes a fry bread in front of the student step by step.
Evaluation:
- Documentation of test results.
- Teacher Observation.
- Criterion Referenced test.

Performance Standards
- 1. Read aloud grade level text with fluency, comprehension, expression, and
personal style demonstrating an awareness of volume, pace, audience, and purpose.
- 2. Use language to:
- -formulate hypotheses
- -evaluate information and ideas
- -present and support arguments
- -influence the thinking of others
3. Make presentations to inform or persuade, selecting vocabulary for impact.
Bench Mark III-A: Use language, literature, and media to understand various social and
cultural perspectives.
- Performance Standards
- 1. Explain why similar character types are found in multiple cultures.
- 2. Identify social/cultural values and beliefs reflected in literature and media.
- 3. Identify archetypal patterns and symbol depicted through literature and media
of various cultures.
Goal:
- To become aware that the Native spoken language is a written language.
- To develop confidence in using the Native language fluently.
