Amp has been rebuilt with all new tubes, metal film resistors and electrolytic, polyester and mylar film capacitors. An isolation transformer was added for isolation from the mains. With the low voltage this circuitry uses the two stages of gain drive the pre-amp pretty hard. The power section is a single ended, cathode biased single 50C5 power tube. At full volume the tube compresses and clips the signal. Combined with the distortion from the 12AX7 preamp tube, and the sag of the tube rectifier it all adds up to a very overdriven tone. Mid volume settings give a very nice bluesy tone. Rolling back the volume of the guitar cleans it up nice. The original p.o.s. 6x9 speaker was replaced with a Weber 8" alnico magnet speaker which does a good job delivering that tone, making for a very nice low volume practice amp. |
