Good afternoon, 1108 students!

I apologize that I will not be with you this first week of class.  I am currently in Panama conducting field research and will be back to Armstrong in time for lecture on January 21.  I have provided you with a syllabus and lecture schedule that I would like for you to thoroughly read through.  Please bring any questions you have regarding the schedule and testing and/or assignments when you come to class, and I will be glad to answer them.

In addition, I have provided you with three online assignments that I would like for you to complete for the week in which I will be gone.  They are described in detail below. All of the assignments will require Internet access. If you do not have a home computer, you can visit the Lane library for free computer access.  You will be responsible for the material for testing purposes, so be sure to take time accurately filling in the information!

January 12: Course Introduction

Visit my website www.geocities.com/rlaughter to get yourself acquainted with me and the course.  If you click on the ABOUT ME link, you can find out how long I’ve been teaching and what I do at my other job.  In addition, click on the BIOLOGY 1108 link to find your class homepage.  Here, you will see various links--one will take you to study guides for the lecture exams.  You will also find links to your lab page and other relative information.  The lecture notes will be posted as the course progresses.  These notes will be outlines of what I will be speaking about in class, but you will find that there are many gaps in the lecture notes.  This is to encourage everyone to attend class and participate by filling in the missing information.  If you miss class, it is expected that you get the notes from a peer.

January 14: The Biosphere

Go to the homepage of the class website and print out the outline of lecture notes for “The Biosphere.”  Fill in the missing gaps as directed, utilizing library and Internet resources.

January 16: Population Growth

Go to the homepage of the class website and complete the questions provided under the link for “Population Growth.”
