Israel is currently constructing a fence or wall enclosing the West Bank. While they maintain that it is for their own safety and security, the Palestinians living both within and without the wall call it an infringement on their human rights.
- The Jewish/Israeli position on the Fence:
This article, published in the Near East Report (July 15, 2002; July 28, 2003) and the Jerusalem report (September 8, 2003) explains the wall as a necessity for Israel's safety. It provides various maps showing the path and progress of the wall. The wall has since grown to surround more territory.
- The Palestinian point of view:
It is quite difficult, near to impossible, to sum up how the Palestinians feel about the wall. Some point out that 10% of Palestinians will be trapped outside the wall, which will separate them from their friends and relatives. (One might ask if the wall will actually provide safety) Others call it an abuse of human rights, a ghetto, or a prison. I found it difficult to give just one article so instead I linked to one site with many articles. I would suggest, too, that anyone interested in this wall/fence/security barrier/separation barrier should do more extensive research about it online.
