Week Three: What is Faith?
1) One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the topic of the week.
There are two different kinds of faith. The first kind is the secular idea that says faith is a complete trust or a belief in something even though one does not have absolute certainty that he or she is correct. For example, I believe the Cardinals will go to the World Series this year. The other kind is religious Faith. This Faith is defined as an intellectual assent to loving God and His revelation. Faith is the Golden Way. If we want to be saved from false religious ideas, we must have Faith. We must choose the middle way of beliefs supported by reason. If we choose otherwise, we might become a nihilist or a radical. A nihilist is one who believes that traditional beliefs and values are unfounded and that existence is useless and senseless; a doctrine that denies any objective ground of truth, especially moral truth. A radical is someone who believes something is true without any real evidence. Each of these is damaging because they can cause us to stray from God's true will for us, and thus, must be avoided.
2) List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.
- First, I want to remember the importance of reason in faith. I want to remember this because it can help me to make sure that what I believe is really aligned with the will of God because it can cause me to question my beliefs.
- Second, I want to remember the cardinal and theological virtues. I want to remember these so that I can make them a part of my lifestyle and thus help me to become better person.
Cardinal Virtues
| Prudence | Sound Judgment in Practical Matters |
| Temperance | Nothing taken to excess; everything in moderation |
| Justice | Displaying Fairness Towards Others |
| Fortitude | Ability to Bear Misfortune Patiently |
Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, Love
- Finally, I want to remember the choices of Fr. Gabriel, Rodrigo, and the cardinal in "The Mission." I want to remember how Faith can sometimes put one in a tough position and how it is not usually good vs. bad that one is forced to decide between, but rather two goods. I want to remember the courage of Fr. Gabriel and Rodrigo in following their conscience and Faith to the end. I want to remember this so that I realize the cost of discipleship I might have to pay as a follower of Christ.

4) One good question you should keep with you to ponder.
- Are my beliefs all based on reason? Have I accepted any of my beliefs without thinking about them? Have I let other people do the thinking for me in matters of faith rather than thinking about them myself?
5) What should you try to do to make you a better person from this study?
I think there are a few things I can do to make myself a better person from this study. First, I think I can be a more virtuous person. I think that if I commit myself to the cardinal and theological virtues, I would become a better person. Also, I think I can make myself a better person from this study by examining my beliefs and making sure that they are well founded on reason. I think that if I examined my faith more in depth, I would strengthen my beliefs and understand more about them.
