HISTORY OF MADURAI MATH
Madurai is not only a great centre of learning and culture but also a holy city blessed  with the divine grace of Mother Meenakshi.

Down the centuries, innumerable people have come here on pilgrimage. Swami Vivekananda came to this Temple City of Madurai for the first time in 1892.  Later, during his second visit in 1897, he gave a lecture, What We Ought to Know, to a large learned gathering.

The Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi too has visited Madurai. Further, some of the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna, namely, Swamis Brahmananda, Shivananda, Ramakrishnananda, Premananda, Niranjanananda, Subodhananda, Vijnanananda and Abhedananda also have come to Madurai  on pilgrimage.

It is on account of this holiness of the city and association with the lives of such great persons that Sri Ramakrishna Math in Madurai was affiliated to the Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, in May 1987.

Following this the number of devotees and well-wishers of the Math gradually increased, and so, for meeting their spiritual needs, and of the future generations also, Sri Ramakrishna Temple at the  Math was inaugurated in 1998. This temple is open to all irrespective of caste, creed or religion.
