OverviewTherapy for the Sole is a 5km run/walk hosted by the Physical Therapy Awareness Student Organization and Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston (HHH), with special thanks to Runner's High Club. BenefitThis event is made possible through a partnership between physical therapy (PT) students at Texas Woman's University and health professionals at Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston. It is our common goal to provide valuable PT services for the homeless population in the Houston community. We focus on many health problems, including foot ulcers related to unmanaged diabetes. Since many homeless people do not have proper footwear, this health concern is magnified, putting many at unnecisary risk of infection, which can lead to the loss of their feet or legs. The best defense agains these complications are treatment, education, and prevention. PT's can provide regular foot exams and educate patients regarding diabetic foot care. Your simple donations of athletic shoes and socks will help prevent future foot complications. This will enable the homeless in Houston to take a healthy step towards being physically fit, getting jobs, and increasing their quality of life. All donations of athletic footwear and about 75% of the financial proceeds will go to HHH, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The remainder of the proceeds go to fund scholarships at Texas Woman's University PT Department. Last year's race raised over $10,000 for HHH and nearly $3,000 for scholarships. Additionally, the 600+ participants donated enough athletic shoes and socks to fill 18 large boxes. About the RaceThe race is on Thursday evening, June 12, 2003 at 7:30 PM. It takes place in the historic Sam Houston Park, in the heart of downtown Houston. |
