Yukishiro (Himura) Tomoe

Tomoe and her 'cool beauty'

Tomoe, a lady of mysteries, the cool beauty that changed Kenshin's life forever...
She is truly a mysterious lady who enters Kenshin's life seemingly by chance, stays in it, tells nothing about her past, and still haunts his life long after her death.
She dies? Well, yes. Kenshin killed her? Unfortunately, accidentally, yes. The scene appears in the manga (vol. 21), and is too complicated to explain here. It's also a very emotional and heartbreaking scene, so I won't say much about it or it will lose its sad magic.

I know that a lot of people don't like Tomoe - maybe because she is not the kawaii easy-to-love anime heroine type. Maybe it's because she somehow seems to be Kaoru's love opponent. Or maybe it's because she dies, and it is just too sad to think about. Maybe, she... er... well, I'm not one of those people...
Tomoe was born in noble family. Her mother died when Tomoe was young so she helped raise Enishi, her little brother. She was engaged to a handsome samurai, who was later killed and she swore to avenge his death. However, fate brought her to fall in love with hitokiri Battousai, and later everything ended in tragedy. All right, that was her short biography. The sad part is over; I'll say no more on this subject.
Tomoe is rather reserved - very reserved, if you compare her with Kaoru. No one ever knows what she is thinking, except, of course, her diary. Anyway, she plays a big part in Kenshin's life. If there wasn't Tomoe, there wouldn't be the cute rurouni we all know as Kenshin. Tomoe is always doing the old-fashioned girl things like sewing, sweeping the floor, wearing White Plum perfume, bringing blankets to a sleeping hitokiri who almost murders her, falling in love with that same hitokiri whom she has sworn to kill, dying trying to kill someone else, et cetera. ^^;;;;; You see, old-fashioned kinds of life are a bit complicated; there is a lot of murdering going around.
Smiling...
There's one thing I'd like to say: Tomoe is not Kaoru's enemy!!! Well, she's dead. So leave the dead in peace. Now Kenshin loves Kaoru and he has only her in his heart.
I think Tomoe is lovable in her way. She's quite real for an anime character, and her conflict is serious, so you need an open mind to realize what she has to go through and to understand this unique Tomoe.
