Sagara Sanosuke

Sagara Saonosuke! Isn't he kinda handsome?

You can usually find him hanging around the Kamiya Dojo, teasing Yahiko, dodging stuff thrown by Kaoru, napping easily in front of the Dojo, and looking for something to eat. He enjoys a good fight and may seem a bit aggressive, but he never takes any advantage of his opponent. And his frank and outspoken fashion of doing things is really admirable. He's a true friend to the rest of the Kenshin-gumi and can be very dependable in tough times. He never fails them, especially in fights, he never gives up even though he is in the worst condition possible already. Sano can be quite a gentleman too. He once walks Megumi to the 'parking-lot', giving the reason of 'It wouldn't be safe letting a fox-lady and two servants go unescorted.'

He might seem like an ordinary happy-go-lucky nineteen-year-old who takes life easily. But he, too, has a painful past. Sanosuke, son of a farmer, ran away from home to join the Sekihou Tai at the age of nine, hoping to build a new era. However, after the revolution, the Sekihou Tai was accused of being a fake army, and its leader, Sagara Sozou, was executed. Sano was then filled with hatred. He hated the government, the Ishinshishi, but mostly himself, for not being able to do anything but watch the person he respected most die. After that, he spent his time fighting, until he became well-known as Zanza, the 'fighter for hire'. Then he meets Kenshin, who pulls him out of his past during their fight, and later becomes a good friend to the Kenshin-gumi, but he never takes off the word 'Aku' on his back.   You don't know what it's like to carry the word 'Aku' on your back.
The government has marked Sagara-taichou's life with the word evil and he can't just simply forget that. The Sekihou Tai was something very special to him. He still thinks about his past often, but he has a different way to deal with it. Now he has a new life and his wounded heart is beginning to heal. I'm glad he has the Kenshin-gumi as his family.
Sano at the gambling house.      Sano likes to drink, gamble, and have fun. He sure knows how to enjoy life. I like his attitude and the carefree way of living. It's good to have Sano around. He lightens up the atmosphere (when he isn't facing a dangerous matter of life and death. You know, if he is, he can be frighteningly serious) His interaction with other characters is always entertaining to watch. He's so 'himself'. And he makes me laugh so often that I can't help loving him.
