Saitoh Hajime

Saitoh Hajime, the Wolf of Mibu, was the leader of the third unit of the Shinsen-gumi during the revolution. He is now known as Fujita Goro of the police force. He's a man with a short principle; 'Aku. Soku. Zan', translated as 'kill evil instantly'. And that's exactly what he does. He first appears so evil (that I was convinced he was really evil), hurting Sano badly, and trying to kill Kenshin. But later it turns out to be that he's just testing if Kenshin is good enough to deal with Shishio. Actually, he is testing if Kenshin is still Battousai. Anyway, during the fight, they both snap and really try to kill each other. Fortunately, Okubo comes just in time to stop them. Saitoh uses a sword technique called Gotatsu, designed to finish the enemy off in one single attack. Simple as it may seem, very few people manage to survive it, taking into account that Saitoh is very skilled at it. And that's why his fight with Battousai is one of the best I've ever watched. |
| Saitoh? I think he's a friend. He never shows it, though. He seems to be cool and calm at all times. And he doesn't care what other people think of him. He would do anything to fulfill his philosophy. He might call you an idiot, but you could definitely rely on him when it comes to upholding justice. He's responsible and never walks out on his duties. Everyone knows that and they in some way trust him. It's another kind of friendship. You trust and respect each other without being actually friends. |  |
| Soba and cigarettes. Saitoh is always smoking a cigarette when he isn't eating soba. He could coolly light another one even during fights! He's always calm and confident. And I like his anti-hero kind of attitude. He can insult and kill people without changing the expression on his face. But, no, he's not evil. He just doesn't really care about things other than his belief. Saitoh certainly knows what he's doing. He's sure of his belief. He realizes where he stands. And he makes his point short and clear. Aku. Soku. Zan. He's just so cool! |
