Himura Kenshin

What more could you ask for? He's polite. He's honest. He's friendly. He's useful to have around the house. And not to mention extremely cute! But never underestimate him. Whenever it comes to fighting, he's not as harmless as he looks. He was the legendary and probably the most feared Hitokiri Battousai himself.
So what happened? Why did he take the non-killing oath and go off to be a wanderer?
A little boy named Shinta was saved from a gang of robbers by a master of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, known as Hiko Seijuro. Considering that the boy had no other relatives, Hiko Seijuro decided to raise and teach him his sword techniques, giving the boy a new life, and a new name of Himura Kenshin.
After that, I think Kenshin spent the rest of his childhood happily in Hiko's care, learning the famous Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. Years passed and he soon became quite skilled for a fourteen-year-old. But then, one day, he made a very important decision to leave his master.

kawaii!

The Hitokiri Battousai      He was a teenager filled with enthusiasm and eagerness to change the way things were. He wanted to help create a new era in which all people would be equal and could live freely. With Hiko's disapproval, he left to join the Ishinshishi and rebelled against the royalists. He worked secretly as a hitokiri, living in the shadows. No one knew if he really existed, but his name became a fearful legend.
It's not his fault. He killed for the new era. He always said 'This is nothing personal, but for the new era, I have to take your lives'. He believed that's how it had to be done. I think there were many times that he doubted if he was doing the right thing. He tried not to feel anything, but inside he regretted every lives he had taken. It was like a nightmare, but he was into it so deep that he didn't know how to back out.
Until he met Tomoe. I think she's the first person to teach him the true meaning of happiness. He then realized that he could not simply create a new era by destroying lives. But then, just as he was opening his heart to another human, a tragedy followed just too soon. What happened to Tomoe hit him so hard that he blamed himself for everything. Depressed and confused, he swore not to kill again after the revolution, and became wanderer, traveling all over Japan, but never able to bring himself to go to Kyoto, where such bitter memories lie. Can you believe he's already 28?
Then one day, his life comes to another turning point when he meets a girl called Kamiya Kaoru. He accepts her invitation to stay at the Kamiya Dojo, knowing that she doesn't care about his past.
Time passes and he finds happiness once again, with Kaoru, Yahiko, and Sano as his family. He still has to fight, and in serious ones that involves Kaoru's safety, his assassin soul gets awaken and he turns into Battousai. But thankfully, every time he's able to turn back into Kenshin by Kaoru's voice. But all that is about to change. In the Kyoto Arc, he goes back to his master Hiko and learns the rest of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu techniques, so he doesn't have to become Battousai to fight well anymore. Although he's able to defeat Shishio, I think he's quite disturbed by the sad memories Kyoto brings back. Things get worse when Enishi appears and carries out his Jinchuu, trying to avenge Tomoe's death. Enishi kidnaps Kaoru, leaving behind a lay figure of her, dead. It's the cruelest thing that could have ever happened to Kenshin. He really falls apart, losing all hope and his will to live. But this gives him a lot of time to think. He thinks his sins over and over until he finds the answer to all that. He, for the first time, realizes that he has to live the present and that he can't spend the rest of his life feeling guilty. He can't change the past, but can make the best of the future. So he comes out of his misery and later learns that Kaoru is still alive. That's good news (to me too). He and the others rescue Kaoru, and they live happily together. Forever, I hope.
That's his life. Knowing about his past makes us understand him better. Some people may ask why I don't separate Kenshin and Battousai into two different characters. Well, you see, they are the same person. The hitokiri wasn't at all different from Kenshin. It was just a role he had to play.
I love Kenshin. Even he is the legendary swordsman, he still does the laundry, prepares meals, and cleans up the house. (One thing that makes him so lovable is that he seems to enjoy doing housework. You can't find anything like that real life. Guys usually leave it for women.) He says 'oro' when he is confused, which is so cute. He gets kicked around by his friends. Being a swordsman that skilled, he has to know someone's foot or punch or shinai is coming, and he doesn't even try to avoid it. He has a very good heart. He helps strangers in distress, and always have kind words to encourage and comfort them. He cares for others and is willing to do anything to make this world a happier place. Sigh! He's certainly the perfect hero.

K&K forever!

Kenshin & Kaoru make a lovely couple, don't you think so?
