Hiko Seijuro

Master of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu himself!    The thirteenth generation of Master of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, with the unmatchable sword talent, Hiko Seijuro. ('But thinks himself handsome and ingenious, and likes to pick on his pupil. He's even worse than Saitoh', Kenshin once said.)
He's the one who teaches Kenshin how to use a sword. And yes, he's all what Kenshin said him to be. He's a true genius when it comes to using the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. He considers him really good-looking (which apparently he is, and also cool and smart, if you ask me). He always calls Kenshin his 'baka deshi' which means 'stupid pupil'.
Hiko is the one who rescued Kenshin from robbers when he was a little boy. He then sheltered him (and gave him a new name as well. You know, Kenshin was formerly 'Shinta') When Kenshin was fourteen, they had a fight. Kenshin wanted to go out into the world. Hiko disagreed, saying he was too young, but Kenshin left anyway. They never saw each other again for about fourteen years, until Kenshin comes back and asks him to teach the Ougi.
Hiko is forever drinking sake but never seems to get drunk. And a bit about the mantle he's wearing: It weighs ten kilograms! (For building up the wearer's muscles.) Actually it has been passed down from the earlier generations of Hiko Seijuro.

I like Hiko. Not only because he's so cool or handsome, but because he 'knows'. He knows Kenshin and easily sees through him. He sees through Fuji's heavy armors. Hiko is mature and good-tempered. And although he doesn't like to get much involved in other businesses and prefers to live peacefully in his cottage in the hills making pottery, it doesn't mean he doesn't care. He comes to the Aoiya's rescue just in time. He knows about Kenshin's life as hitokiri Battousai, and even Tomoe. I guess he couldn't have helped wondering 'what is my baka deshi doing?'. He makes Kenshin seem a child. The interaction between them is very entertaining to watch. And do you know this man is forty-three! Well, anyway, Hiko Seijuro certainly helps add a lot of 'color' to the series. He also makes it more realistic by answering the question of how Kenshin gets so good. Well, he's got a good shishou.
