Baby Ayden
September 14, 2005

Baby Ayden was born May 14, 2005 with a rare condition in which his brains cerebral hemispheres are absent and are replaced by sacs filled with cerebrospinal fluid.  Hydranencephaly has no definitive treatment.  He will require lifelong medications and special care.

His physicians believe that Ayden probably suffered a prenatal stroke.  Already he has made the trip to Riley Hospital several times.  There are no pediatric hematologists in
Fort Wayne to treat his hypo-coagulation condition so more trips are on the horizon.  Ayden has a shunt in his head to relieve the pressure of the fluid build up.  He takes four different medicines.  His mother, Aubrey, and his grandmother, Ronna, take turns with his care.  Ayden also suffers from gastro esophageal reflux and feeding is difficult, since he also has trouble sucking and swallowing.  Physical therapists are working with him to develop feeding skills and to combat his increased muscle tone, also referred to as Cerebral Palsy.  Seizures and diabetes are fairly common in children with hydranencephaly, but so far Ayden has been spared these complications.

Please check back to Ayden's website for updates on his condition.  Thank you for your compassion.
