Marucci's English Scones


Bake time: 25 minutes at 325 F (roughly)

This recipe prepares about 10 scones.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 to 1 cup of dried raisins (and/or dried apricots)
  • 1 tablespoon brandy (optional but recommended by rk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest (peel)
  • 2 cups all-purposed flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick (1/4 lb) butter
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

  • Cut dried raisins/apricots into small pieces.
  • In a small bowl, mix raisins/apricots, brandy, and orange zest.
  • In a big bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and butter as follows: with a spoon first, cut butter into small lumps then use your hands and mix.
  • Stir in dried fruit mixture.
  • Add 1/2 cup buttermilk, leave the remaining for coating the scones.
  • stir to evenly moisten dough. Don't over mix the dough.
  • Divide dough into 10 scones on a baking sheet, and coat with buttermilk.
  • Bake scones in a 325 F oven until golden brown, about 25 minutes.
