VAN HALEN

For me one band epitomised the rock scene in the 1980's and that was Los Angeles finest VAN HALEN.Their debut self titled album, released in 1978, rewrote the rules.Incredible guitar solo's, a solid powerhouse rhythm section and up front one of rock's brashist showmen, Dave Lee Roth.Throughout the 80's the band went from strength to strength, hitting an all time peak of popularity with the release of the sixth studio album '1984'.Sadly the following year the unthinkable happend and Dave Lee Roth was sacked , Dave persued a solo career and Van Halen recruited the dreadfull Sammy Hagar as a replacement for Roth. Diamond. Dave released some fine albums, very much in the spirit of his previous band, the songs were type you'd play in the Summer with the roof down, the live gigs were flash, brash and fun, promo videos were chock full of nonsense. Meanwhile Van Hagar relesed a fairly respectable rock album 5150 but following the release of the turgid OU812 that was it for me and the band and I disowned them.
