This software should reach you free from Viruses, Trojans, Worms, and other nasty "undesirable features" that could harm the integrity of your system. If you believe that something nasty of this nature has happened, please contact the authors so you can be sent a clean copy. Richard Voogd r_voogd@xtra.co.nz Some basic definitions: There are many ways a malicious or mischievous programmer can cause a problem. These are some of the ways: TROJAN: A feature which is hidden. Sometimes called a "logic bomb". Named in recognition of the Trojan Horse of Greek mythology, where a group of soldiers, stuck for ideas for how to get into a city, built an enormous horse in which they could hide. They arranged for it to be presented to the good town folks as a gift with them safely hidden inside. The moral of the story is to beware of something that sounds too good to be true - there is likely to be a hidden surprise! VIRUS: To be correctly identified as a virus, a program must be able to reproduce itself. It sometimes uses stealth techniques similar to a trojan. WORM: A piece of programming which makes a nuisance of itself by slithering into places it's not wanted, usually at the expense of reducing the availability of resources. The key feature of these nasties is the nuisance value, which can be anything from a simple practical joke message, "Your computer is stoned", to major corruption of your data. With present day equipment, physical damage is unlikely. With the help of suitable firewall and anti-virus software, together with a good meausre of good sense, the risk of damage to your equipment and data can be kept to a minimum. The protection built in to the software included in this package won't actually stop an infection, but will go some way to prevent further damage to your system by using an infected copy.
