September 29, 1996 Teenager killed over $50 Shooter fled to Virginia, say police ROBERT MOHL News Editor ROANOKE RAPIDS-- Gary Leon Harvey was killed for $50. Shot in the chest with a small caliber handgun, the 18-year-old resident of Windsor Forest Trailer Court off Everett School Road was killed late Friday night. His killer remains at large, police say. Accused of the crime is Kenneth Lea Pugh, 20, of Route 1, Box 321 in Roanoke Rapids. Pugh, who police say shot Harvey over $50 in drug money, is currently at large. Ricky Lamont Pugh, 19, Kenneth's brother who lives at the same address, has been arrested and charged with being an accessory to a felony after the fact. Ricky drove Kenneth to Newport News, Va. after the shooting, police said. Ricky is being held without bail in the Halifax County Jail. His first court appearance is Oct. 1. According to police, Kenneth went to Harvey's residence at 11:30 p.m. on Friday to demand $50 Harvey owed him. When Harvey refused to pay, Kenneth shot him once and then drove off in his brother's maroon Ford Escort. Harvey was taken to Halifax Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police arriving at the scene got a description of the shooter and car from eyewitnesses. They went to the empty Pugh house and staked it out until 5:30 a.m. on Saturday when Ricky returned. He was then placed under arrest. Police say Kenneth was taken to Newport News, Va. where police are looking for him. "We are just going to start tracking him down," said Capt. Chuck Ward of the Halifax County Sheriff's Department, who is heading the manhunt. Assisting in the investigation are Deputies Steve Allen, Mark Macon and Detective Bill Wheeler.
