Notes for Clara Agnes SMITH

Clara recalled coming to Texas from New Orleans with her sister, mother and step-father. She was age six(1863). It was during the Civil War and a skirmish was on the river. They need a permit from Gen. Bragg and then risk their lives running the gauntlet between the firing squads of the North and South guns. She remembered the play of the cannon balls on the water around the boat. Fate was with them and no one was hurt.

She states she was born in a French Community in New Orleans and spoke only that language until she was 6 or 7. Eli Hargrave in 1937 relates she very harty in her four scroe years.
