William Wright Morris was born in Halifax, NC in 1805. He migrated to AL. in 1840 where he taught school and studied law. As a bachelor in 1847, he came to Henderson with his widowed mother , a widowed sister and her three children, 2 younger brothers and families, his overseer and several slaves.
He was appointed district Judge in 1854 and 1859 he represented Rusk Co. in the 8th Legislature. He was devoted to promotion of the railroad in E. TX and interested in Rusk Co., resources. Clay found on his land was used to make brick and pottery. ( In a book "Rusk Co. Then and Now" it states William sent his clay to London, England to be tested for the best quality fire brick. Later, the site where his home once stood became a brick manufacturing plant.)
He built his Plantation home in 1849 and died there June 3, 1883 and is buried in Henderson City Cemetery. Morris Co., TX was created in 1875 and named in his honor.
