Clayton, TX
The first Baptist Church in this County was at Clayton. Organized on Saturday before the 4th Lord's Day in Sept. 1843, by Rev. Isaac Reed, a pioneer Baptist Minister in his home two miles NW of Clayton.
Original Minutes of Organization of Bethel Baptist Church at Clayton, Panola Co., TX, Sept. 4, 1843; Republic of TX, Harrison Co. at Elder Reed's Dwelling House.
On Saturday before the 4th Lord's Day in Sept. 1843, We the members of the united Baptist order being met together in the fear of God for the purpose of Constituting the Church Bethle and called elder Isaac Reed and Lemuel Herrin as a Presbetry; called on Abner Herrin as Secretary and Cler, protem. The Church Covenant being read and approved, and we whose names are undersigned were pronounced by the Presbetry The Church Bethel. We then opened a soor for the reception of members redeived Elder Isaac Reed by letter into our fellowship: Received Elder Lemuel Herring by letter into our fellowship then concluded by prayer.

To Thomas G Davenport, Chief Justice in and for said County, the undersigned Petitioners, do hereby certify to your Honor that they will apply at the next term of the Probate Court to be holden on the 25th instant to hear the last will and testament of Isaac Reed deceased probated having been appointed Executors to said will and testament we pray your Honor to have the legal notice given as the law directs and we will ever pray as in duty bound. State of Texas
Panola Bounty......I, Isaac Reed, of the State and Coounty afore said being of an advanced age, and laboring under great bodilly disease, yet sound mind and memory, have thought proper to make the following distrubution as my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills, in the manner and form following....To Wit..
1st I give and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth, during her natural life, one Negro man, Caleb and one Negro woman, Lett, one hundred dollars in cash, which I have heretofore given in her possesion, my 2 horses, Price and Gray and a sufficientcy of cotton, hogs and sheep for her support, the precise amount to be left to her own election, together with the kitchen and household furniture, and such farming tools as she may wish to keep and after her death to be equally disposed of amoung the Heirs.
2nd Give and bequeath to the heirs of my son John H. Reed, one fourth of a league of Land valued at one dollar per acre or eleven hundred and seven dollars, a part of the headright of Manuel Antonio Romero and adjoining one fourth of a League conveyed by me to Elizabeth Shepherd and one Negro boy, Josh, values at four hundred dollars.
3rd I give and bequeath to my son Samuel one fourth league of land or eleven hundred and seven acres, valued at one dollar per acre, also a part of the said Manuel Antonio Romero and adjoining the north boundary line of the aforesaid one fourth of a league bequeathed to the heirs of my son John Reed, and a girl named Mariah, valued at three hundred dollars.
4th I give and bequeath to the heirs of my son Isaac H. Reed, dec'd, one fourth league of land, the remainder of the headright Manuel Antonio Romero. It being the northern quarter of the said league valued at one dollar per acre and also four hundred to be set apart by my executors in a Negro or other real estate which are to be under control of executors for their benifit until they all come of age.
5th I give and bequeath to my daughter Frances Morris, one fourth of a league of land, a part of the headright of John Caughren on which she now resides and which have been heretofore set apart by a survey, valued at one dollar per acre. Having heretofore given to my daughter Frances one Negro girl, Jani valued at four hundred dollars.
Also to my son William B. Reed one fourth league of land, valued at one dollar per acre, and a Negro boy valued at five hundred.
And to my daughter Margaret Roark one fourth league of land at one dollar per acre and a Negro girl valued at four hundred dollars.
Also to my daughter Elizabeth Shepherd one fourth league of land and a Negro girl valued at four hundred dollars.
And it is my desire that my executors account to and pay over my said son Samuel four hundred dollars out of the proceeds of my estate so as to make the distribution to him equal with the balance of my Heirs.
And also that they my executors make up to Mary Awalt fifty dollars so as to make her ditribution equal.
And that my son Wm B. account to the estate for one hundred dollars which was in excess in my distrubution to him.
And Wm. Roark have so far as his claim may extend out of my part of the Bradley League of land in Rusk Co., against Samuel A. Reed which id to be deducted out of his part of my estate.
And further it is my request the Abram Samuel P. and James, heirs of my deceaded son Isaac have the use of my gray mare to raise each of them a colt amd them and my grand daughter Kiziah also heir of my son Isaac have each a three year old heifer that is now with my stock with their own mare.
And it is further my will and desire that the remaining part of my estate by equally divided amongst all my heirs by sale or otherwise as they mutually agree.
And lastly that my son William B. Reed and Wm. Roark I appoint as my Executors to this will and testament and further that the probate court take no action on the same further then the Registration Process as the Law may require.

Buried Nov. 25, 1848 Old Bethel Church, Panola, TX
Head stones carverd by slaves from stone and still are the markers of the graves.
1936 the State of TX erected a memorial marker to, " Rev. Isaac Reed, Pioneer Baptist Minister, b. in TN. Came to TX in 1834. Rev. Reed erected the Old North Churh near Nacogdoches in 1838. In 1843 he erected Old Bethel Church."
